PRIMARY CONSOLIDATION SETTLEMENT CALCULATION

Normally Consolidated Clay: (σ’0 = σ’c)

Settlement, Sc = Cc/(1+e0) H Log10(σ’0+Δ σ’/ σ’0)

Over consolidated Clays:

Case-I (σ’0+Δσ’ ≤ σ’c)

Case-II (σ’0+Δσ’ > σ’c)

Where,
Sc = Primary Consolidation Settlement
σ’0 = average effective pressure on the clay layer before the construction of the foundation
σ’c = pre-consolidation pressure
Δσ’ =average increase in effective pressure on the clay layer caused by the construction of the foundation
e0 = initial void ratio of the clay layer
Cc = compression index
Cs = swelling index
Hc = thickness of the clay layer

We got the values from Triaxial Compression Test

σ’c = 110Kn/m2 (Found it from e log p Curve by Casagrande’s Graphical Method)
e0 = 0.735
Cc = 0.12
Cs = 0.03
Hc = 6m
γd = 13.53kn/m3
γw = 9.81kn/m3
P = 754.8Kn
B = 1.98m
B = 2.44m

σ’0 = (γd*D) + (γd- γw) * D
= {(13.53x0.914) + (13.52-9.81) x (3)}
= 23.71kn/m2

Δσ’ = P/A
=754.5/ [{(2.44+(5*2)} * {1.98+(5*2)}]
= 5.07 kn/m2
σ’0+Δσ’ = 23.71+5.07
=28.77kn/m2

Since, (σ’0+Δσ’ ≤ σ’c), Its Normally Consolidate Clay

Settlement, Sc = Cc/(1+e0) H Log10(σ’0+Δ σ’/ σ’0)

= [{(0.12/1.7356) x6} x Log {(28.77)/23.71)}]

=34.91mm

Note: Typical consolidation curve for finding procedure of pre-consolidation pressure.
