 Character

Jackie : protagonist, round

He is a young boy who hates his grandmother and sister, and he is terrified of making his first
confession. He tries to kill the grandmother, but he is also afraid. He has a dynamic character
because he learns and has regrets to be right in the end.

Nora : antagonist , flat

She is Jackie’s old sister. She is a good girl but she is little bit jealousy. She is an antyagonist because
she against Jackie as protagonist character.

Mrs Ryan : antagonist,round,static

She is an old woman who prepared children for their first communion in the church. She is a static
character, she just tries to keep a rule without caring the psychology of Jackie.

The priest : protagonist,flat

He is a kind priest. He hears Jackie’s first confession and takes pity on him. The priest is also a flat
character. He never changes to be a bad or scare people. The priest is protagonist because he is in
the same way with Jackie to help him to be good and understood.

Grandmother : antagonist

She is Jackie and Nora's grandmother. Sheis a horrible woman for Jackie. She is the reason that
makes conflict between Nora and Jackie because she isn't fair. She favors Nora than Jackie.

 Setting

*. Night at dining room

When Mother was at work and my grandmother made the dinner I

wouldn't touch it. Nora once tried to make me, but I hid under the

table from her and took the bread-knife with me for protection. (1st paragraf)7

*. Saturday at the chapel

I was to go to confession

myself on Saturday and be at the chapel for communion with the

rest. (5th pharagraph)

*. At the church

I remember that steep hill down to the church, and the sunlit hillsides beyond the valley of the river,
which I saw in the gaps between the houses like Adam's last glimpse of Paradise.

Nora was sitting on the railing, waiting for me, and she put on a

very sour puss when she saw the priest with me. ( 60th pharagraph)
 Theme

The theme of this story is about overcoming fears, Jackie was scared to death about making a
confession, but when he did, he finally found himself and realized why he was so upset and fears.
And the story teach the readers how important a confession is and how we should accept the
mistakes we have done.

 Plot

Introduction : Jackie want to confess his sin about his badness to his grandmother to the priest

expotition : when jackie’s grandfather died, his grandmother moved in with jackie’s family. Jackie
angred with his grandmother because he hate his grandmother. He thought she was a bad person
and blamed her for everything that went wrong. Jackie tried to kill his grandmother in kitchen 6 he
didn’t want to touch his grandmother food and nora was forcing him.

Conflict : Internal : *. Jackie had a internal emotional conflict. He was stressing out to go to a
confession. He heard stories and rumors and was terrified to hear that people get killed over bad
confessions. He later overcomes his fear and solved his conflict with himself.

*. Jackie has a conflict between his older sister, Nora. they constantly have
arivalry between each other. Jackie is alwaysteased and bullied by his sister. Their conflict is the
major one in the first confession.

Eksternal : The first confession takes place in Ireland. A country that is mostly Roman Catholics. I
think to confess at least once is important So if Jackie didn'tconfess, he would be breaking one of the
ten commandments. Jackie knows that andbelieve everyone breaks the rules.

Resolution : Jackie meet the priest and make his first confession to the priest and apologize about his
badness to his family especially his grandmother . After talking with the priest, Jackie became
relieved and realized that the intention to kill means nothing. In addition, he also knew
that he will not die in the night due to a confession.

Climax : While Jackie makes his confession, he realizes he keeps talking and getting no response in
return. He climbs a shelf where he was actually supposed to kneel on, and falls down on his face.
Nora gets furious and hits Jackie. The priest couldn't believe she could hit a kid and gets very
frustrated. Jackie admitted that he tried to kill his grandmother, which shocked the priest. He
explained to him how he thought his grandmother was a horrible and evil person.

 Point of view

the point of view of this story is first person. The narrator is actually the protagonist and helps us,
the readers, understand his point of view.
