    Costa Rica has a history dating back 10,000 years to early indigenous inhabitants who were described as wearing gold jewelry, giving the country its name which means "rich coast." It was explored by Christopher Columbus in 1502 and came under Spanish control in the 16th century. In 1821, Costa Rica gained independence from Mexico and established San Jose as its capital in 1823. Costa Rica followed a democratic path and avoided much of the civil wars seen elsewhere in Central America. Today it has a population of around 5 million people, of which only 1% are indigenous, and has a stable democracy with universal healthcare and lower levels of poverty than other Central American nations.
