Journal about Therapeutic Communication

Communication is a method, which we use everyday to convey messages and interpret meaning. It

is the exchange of information between two or more people. This sort of communication uses methods such

as talking and listening or writing and reading. However, signs, painting, dancing and storytelling are also

methods of communicating. Therapeutic means relating to the healing of disease according to dictionary.

The goals of therapeutic communication are to help a patient a feel cared for and understood and

establish a relationship in which the patient feels free to express any concerns. Therapeutic communication is

defined as the face to face process of interacting that focuses on advancing the physical and emotional well-being

of a patient. Nurses use therapeutic communication techniques to provide support and information to patients. It

may be necessary to use a variety of techniques to accomplish nursing goals in communicating with a patient. I

remember when we had our work immersion during senior high school and I was in the humanities and social

sciences strand with psychology as my selected career, in women’s center their goal is to help women who are
physically, mentally and socially abuse or bullied and other problems they are troubled with. No matter what their

age is or their status they

are welcome to consult or voice out to the counselors. We counsel some teens who are younger than us and we

encounter that they are facing and carrying a heavy problem so we talk and listen to them and sometimes we give

activities. When counselling, their situation and problems are completely confidential and each one of them have

an appointment maybe once week or once a month depending on their situation and they undergo several sessions

too.

In my own perception, therapeutic communication and counselling are somewhat similar for they

have the same goal but different techniques and process on how they handle them. I believe that communication is

powerful and is helpful and we should use our freedom of speech in order to speak the truth, share encouraging

words and deliver heartwarming messages. With communication there’s no misunderstanding, it should be.
