The Effect Of Tera Gymnastics On Body Balance in the Elderly in UPTD

Balance is the main cause that often results in an elderly person falling easily,
especially when walking and doing daily activities. Therefore it is necessary to handle
to improve body balance, one of them is by giving tera gymnastics. Gymnastics Tera
is a gymnastics adopted from Tai Chi gymnastics that uses breathing techniques and
movements slowly. The purpose of this study was to analyze tera exercise on body
balance in the elderly.

This study used a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test-post test
design. The population in this study were all independent elderly in the UPTD Griya
Werdha Jambangan Surabaya, 40 elderly with purposive sampling technique. The
independent variable is tera gymnastics. The dependent variable is body balance in
the elderly. Data was collected using observation sheets and then analyzed using the
Wilcoxon Sign Ranks Test with a significant level <0.05.

The results showed that the majority of body balance before exercise was
obtained by a low risk of falling as much as 1 respondent (2.5%), moderate fall risk
as many as 24 respondents (60%), and a high risk of falling as many as 15
respondents (37.5%). There is the effect of tera gymnastics on body balance (p =
0,000) in the elderly. And the results of the study after the exercise were obtained by
a low risk of falling as many as 17 respondents (42.5%), moderate fall risk as many
as 18 respondents (45%), and a high risk of falling as many as 5 respondents (15%) in
the Griya Werdha Jambangan Surabaya. It is expected that the elderly will be more
active in taking exercise twice a week to improve body balance.
