What is SPSS?

A software package or a package of programs use for manipulating data,


conducting statistical analysis, and generating tables and graphs

To run SPSS:

Option 1:

Click (in sequence)

Start – Programs – SPSS

Option 2:

Place cursor on the SPSS icon and double click

When SPSS for Windows is first started/opened, a default dialogue box appears
that gives the user a number of options

Select OPEN AN EXISTING DATA SOURCE if you want to start your SPSS

When TYPE IN DATA is selected, the SPSS DATA EDITOR appears


SPSS has three main windows, plus a menu bar at the top.

These allow you to:

1. See your data


2. See your statistical output
3. See any programming commands you have written

Each window corresponds to a separate type of SPSS


DATA EDITOR (.sav files)

This window displays the contents of the data file

The data Editor windows opens automatically when you start a SPSS
session.

At least one Data Editor is open during a SPSS session; the active data set is
marked with a tiny red plus sign on the title bar.

Provides a convenient, spreadsheet-like system/method for defining


entering editing…

STORING AND RETRIEVE

SAVING DATA FILES

To save changes to a data file:

1. Make the Data Editor the active window


2. From the menu choose;
File-Save

*The modified data file is saved, overwriting the previous


version of the file.
