POTATO AND TOMATO AS AN ALTERNATIVE SOURCE OF ELECTRICAL

ENERGY: MEASURING ITS EFFICIENCY THROUGH ITS RUN TIME

CHAPTER 1

THE BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Electricity is the set of physical phenomena associated with the presence and motion of

matter that has a property of electric charge. (Wikipedia) It is widely used by everyone in the

world mainly for powering appliances and technology.

Electricity came from three major sources. First are fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas,

and petroleum. Second is nuclear energy which is released during nuclear fission or fusion,

especially when used to generate electricity and lastly are renewable energy.

Aside from electricity, we can power our devices and appliances with a battery. Batteries

convert chemical energy to electricity. Electrons will travel from one kind of chemical to another

and when electrons flow, this makes an electrical current that can power something. The purpose

of a battery is to connect the right chemicals to the right relationships. Electrons flow only when

there is a wire or a conductor connecting the two sides of the battery.

However, what if there is a place wherein one cannot produce electricity with these

sources or lacks these sources?

Other than the said sources, we have found that there are other alternative sources of

electricity. One of these are vegetables and fruits that contains high potassium or citric level.

Although it possesses a non-renewable energy, it still gives electricity and could possibly help

people by being an alternative battery

This study seeks to show and provide information about vegetables and fruits,

particularly potato and tomato as an alternative source of electricity to expand the knowledge and

widen the options for electrical source.

In addition, we would like to compare which is the most efficient alternative source of

electricity between the said fruit and vegetable.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The purpose of this study is to describe the relationship potato and tomato to electricity

and to compare the two material stated.

1. Does potato and tomato generate electricity?

2. How can people use the electrical energy generated by the potato and tomato?

3. Which is the most efficient electrical source of energy based on its run time between

tomato and potato?

HYPOTHESIS

Based on the statement of the problem, the researchers were able to formulate the

following hypothesis:

Null Hypothesis (H0): Tomato is more efficient as an alternative source of electricity than potato

Alternative Hypothesis (Ha): Potato is more efficient as an alternative source of electricity than

tomato
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Electricity has been playing a vital role in our daily lives. Almost everything we use is

powered by electricity. Thus, we would like to widen the options for electrical source to

everyone by providing this dissertation.

Aside from this, this study is made to let the students learn more about different traits

fruits and vegetables have and provide the teachers possible experimentations for students for

better understanding about electricity.

For travelers who travel in mountains or deserted places and those living in country

sides, this study aims to expand the alternatives for electrical energy especially in case of

emergencies and dire situations wherein the common sources of electricity are not found or

places wherein electricity is lacking.

To the electrical engineers, this study aims to offer ideas about alternative electrical

sources and to possibly help in the near future for future inventions and innovations about

electricity.

Lastly, this thesis is for the basis of other studies to be made by future researchers if

they are to conduct related experimentation or dissertation or to replicate this study. They could

also make improvements or break the limitations of this study.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The main focus of this study is to determine whether potato or tomato would be effective

and better in terms of their run time. The two will be tested so that results can be confirmed. This

study is limited to using only potato and tomato as an alternative source of electricity. There will
be no other variables to be added and no complex laboratory tests to be made. This ensures that

the said vegetable and fruit is natural an in its ordinary state.

dependent variable is its efficiency in terms of its run time

DEFINITION OF TERMS

The following words are the key or important terms considered by the researchers and

have been used operationally

1. CONDUCTOR. An object or type of material that allows the flow of charge (electrical

current) in one or more directions

2. CURRENT. Rate of flow of electric charge past a point[r region. In electric circuits this

charge is often carried by electrons moving through a wire

3. ELECTRICAL ENERGY. Energy derived from electric potential energy or kinetic

energy. Electrical energy is caused by moving electric charges called electrons.

4. ENERGY. The quantitative property that must be transferred to an object in order to

perform work on, or to heat, the object.

5. ELECTRONS. A subatomic particle, symbol e⁻ or β⁻ , whose electric charge is

negative one elementary charge. Electron is considered as the basic unit of electric

charge

6. RESISTANCE. Measure of the opposition to current flow in an electrical circuit.

Resistance is measured in ohms, symbolized by the Greek letter omega (Ω).

7. RUN TIME. A measure of battery performance and longevity

8. VOLTAGE. Electric potential energy per unit charge or amount of energy produced
