6 TRANS SERVICE INDICATOR

This indicator is applicable to transmission installations which utilize the prognostics
TRANS
features of the transmission controls system designed for model year 2009 and later. SERVICE
Purpose of the indicator is to alert the operator that a transmission service problem
exists. The nature of the service issue can be determined by monitoring the behavior OR
of the TRANS SERVICE light or dash display messages (based on messages over the
vehicle SAE J1939 datalink), or via the Allison DOC™ for PC diagnostics program.
Refer to DATALINK COMMUNICATIONS documentation for additional information
regarding the illumination of this indicator.

A TRANS SERVICE indicator must be included in all installations of 1000 and 2000 Product Family
transmissions which utilize the prognostics features. Similarly, it must be included in all installations
of 3000 and 4000 Product Family transmissions which utilize the prognostics features and are
equipped with an Allison strip shift selector (which has no dedicated display feature). The indicator is
optional for all other 3000 and 4000 Product Family transmission installations, since a Transmission
Service Indicator icon is provided as a standard feature of the Allison-supplied shift selector display.
For additional details, refer to paragraph 5.2, and to Section B: System Operation of this manual.

Three options for this indicator are as follows:

1. Controlled by J1939 messaging, indication is via a digital dash text display to describe the alert
condition. A standard red or amber SAE warning light may be used in conjunction with the text
display, but is not required.
2. Controlled by J1939 messaging, indication is via a J1939-based vehicle module that determines
operating state of a dedicated TRANS SERVICE light. Examples of recommended light configura-
tions are illustrated above.
3. Controlled by a hardwired output of the TCM (wire
113) which determines the operating state of a
dedicated TRANS SERVICE light. This provision is
only available with 1000 and 2000 Product Family
transmission models. See illustration at right.
When installed in this manner, the light is illumi-
nated when the TCM switches wire 113 from
OPEN to GROUND. If current draw exceeds 0.5
amps, the light must be activated through a circuit
which includes a relay.

The TRANS SERVICE indicator is supplied and installed by the vehicle builder. This indicator must
have the following properties:
• if the indicator is a dedicated light (options 2 and 3), it must be labelled TRANS SERVICE and/or
include an appropriate ISO symbol or symbols.
• clearly visible in both bright sunlight and nighttime. Green color is highly recommended.
• circuit must include a relay if the current is 0.5 amps or greater
• located in the dash panel. If the vehicle is equipped with two shift selectors, the indicator should
be clearly visible from both operator stations or two indicators should be installed in parallel.

Per standard J1939 practice, if a J1939 controller physically activates the indicator, it must also
perform a bulb check or functionality check at the beginning of each ignition (key switch) cycle.
Refer to DATALINK COMMUNICATIONS documentation for additional information and requirements.

If the light is enabled using the wire 113 hardwire interface, the light will illuminate briefly at TCM
power-up as a bulb check.
