Background of the Study
Facebook is a social networking service launched in February 2004,
owned and operated by Facebook, Inc. As of September 2012. Facebook has over
one billion active users, more than half of them using Facebook on a mobile
device. Users must register before using the site, after which they may create a
personal profile, add others users as friends, and exchange messages, including
automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may
join common interest user groups, organized by work place, school or college, or
other characteristics and categorize their friends into lists such as “People From
Work” or “Close Friends”.
Introduction of infrastructure and technological innovations into countries
have always been the adversaries and blessing opportunities for socio economic
and political life of human beings. Every technological innovation has been a topic
of debate and centre of researchers’ attention and same is the case with the
development of social networking sites. Various researchers have conducted
studies to pinpoint the several impacts of these sites on their users and findings
suggested both bright and dark aspects. Hence, many countries gained open
access to the Internet due to rapid advances in information technology within last
twenty years (Kuppuswamy & Narayan, 2010).
In fact, the Worldwide Web, originally created in 1990 for US military
forces, has become not only an effective instrument for the management of US
army, but later a convenient tool that issued by civilians for communication,
entertainment, and learning purposes. One of the most popular and recognized
platforms used on the Internet are social networking sites such as Facebook.
Facebook being at the forefront of the social media craze, has over 500
million active users on its website every month. It is emerged on February 4,
2004, when a 19-year-old sophomore Harvard student named Mark Zuckerberg
founded the revolutionary site to connect Harvard University students (Grossman,
2010). But later, this site allows users to build social networks with hundreds or
even thousands of people around the world of which university students are one
of the primary demographics using Facebook, with features such as photos, wall
posts, and status updates becoming seemingly irresistible to those who want to
connect with their friends (Gold, 2011).
Even though Facebook is by now used by a much wider variety of users,
university students are still its “biggest fans”. Results from a recent paper Ellison
et al. (2007) reported that 94% of College students are active Facebook users,
spending 60-90 minutes online each day communicating with their Friends List of
150–200 people. Similarly, Wiley and Sisson (2006; as cited in Pempek et al, 2009)
conducted a large survey on college students from universities in the developing
countries indicated that 91% of students use the Facebook. Ethiopia is also as one
of developing countries has intoxicated with around one million users of
Facebook in which half of them are higher education students (Kassashow, 2012)
Though this research, we have focused on one of the social networking site
Facebook and tried to find out the impact of Facebook usage on Students’
Academic Performance in Tudela National Comprehensive High School.

Statement of the Problem

This study would like to investigate the impact of Facebook usage on
student’s academic performance.
Specifically, it seeks answers to the following questions:
1.Is the use of Facebook beneficial for students or does it simply distract them?
2.Are there negative impacts of the Facebook on students’ behavior and
performance?
3.What’s with Facebook, why are some of the students are getting addicted to it?
4.How does Facebook usage affect the life of a student?

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study is exclusive to determine if the social media network, “Facebook”
has a significant impact to the students’ academic performance. It will only focus

towards their academic performances.

Results and Discussions

Part I will show answer regarding to this question: “Is the use of Facebook
beneficials for students or does it simply distract them?”
Most of the respondents answered that Facebook usage really distract
them. They meant that Facebook has become an addiction for many, it gives big
impact on their study. Instead of concentrating on their homework or studying,
they are spending hours looking through pictures, answering their page
comments, and chatting with friends on the sites instant messenger. Facebook
has consumed good grades and face-to-face communication is in endangerment.
Otherwise, some respondents answered that Facebook usage gives
beneficial for them. Other consider their time spend on Facebook valuable,
because it enables them to exchange hours with friends and family, learn about
others’ activities. They also regard their Facebook breaks as a means to renew
their energy so that they can perform better on their subsequent task.
The Internet has provided our world with a different means of
communication and it is accessible to anyone at any time at a click of a mouse.
Facebook is a prime example of a social media network that has a serious effect
on students' lives and education. Some effects are seen to be negative and some
can be seen as positive. Usually people have the right intention of 'checking' their
Facebook or Twitter for a certain amount of time. They usually say 'give me 5
minutes to check my Facebook'. The 5 minutes turns into 20 minutes and that
turns into 40. People are so focused on checking social media that they are
wasting their life sitting in front of computer and letting their lives stop just so
they can scroll through other peoples' lives.
It is one of the most distracting and widely used ways that people divide their
attention, especially since smartphones, laptops, and tablets have made it easier
to bring these distractions with them anywhere. Because these students spend so
much time engaging with media, they spend less time doing homework and even
taking care of themselves by getting enough sleep.
So it is always better to Set Time Limits for Computer-Related Activities.

Part II will show respondents response with the question: “Are there negative
impacts of the Facebook on students’ behavior and performance?”
Respondents response with the use of all the networking sites especially
Facebook, they are coming loose to the real associates in the society. Facebook
chats and posts would make them busy nowadays. They may be connected to
many people but they somehow disconnect to many people but they somehow
disconnect with the important aspects of their lives and one of those is their
education. They prefer to send and receive instant messages or post something
on Facebook than doing some important things or studying.
One of the respondents answered aside of Facebook usage has an effect to
students’ academic performance, it has also an effect on their emotional health.
They may feel connected to others but they manifest depression through seeing
their status updates. Some would utilize to express what they feel towards their
enemy in school or even outside the campus. They would blurt out through
posting status that would target their opponent just to hurt their feelings.
Academic performance problems
Beside the benefits of Facebook use, negative impacts of its use have also
been identified, including: impaired academic performance, health problems,
personal relationship problems and social dysfunction. For example, a number of
studies have reported the ways in which Facebook usage impairs students‟ lives.
Scherer (1997) found that 13% of his respondents reported difficulties in their
academic work and professional performance due to their Facebook use.
Nalwa and Anand (2003) found that Facebook addictive users used for long
sessions, resulting in personal behavioral problems and neglect of important work
responsibilities. Chou and Hsiao (2000) explored Facebook Addiction among
college that result in more negative consequences in their studies than non-
addicts. This conclusion parallels a study by Young (1996), who found that
Internet addicts experienced personal, family, occupational problems, and
academic difficulties, causing poor grades and eventually expulsion from
universities. https://www.grin.com/document/277559

Student’s behavior
However there are some behaviors that can take place due to frequent use
of social networking sites especially students who are using frequently using
social networking sites, results in reduction of time for other activities that are
related academic, physical and social hobbies that requires face to face meeting
(McKenna and Bargh, 2000).
There is another significant factor that is the behavioral consequence
related to communication technology based behavior and this is self-esteem.
Young individuals having lower self-esteem have the high level of usage of instant
messaging than those who have high level of self-esteem (Nalwa and Anand,
2003). Positive feedback improves the self-esteem and negative feedback leads to
lower the level of self-esteem and that is reason that being socialized young
people uses internet’s communication applications because it provides more
positive interaction with others (DeBell and Chapman,
2006).https://www.grin.com/document/277559

Part III show respondents answer regarding this question: “What’s with
Facebook, why are some of the students are getting addicted to it?”
Respondents answered why they getting addicted to Facebook because
usage of Facebook makes them comfortable any time they use it. For them it is
overwhelming they get in touch with their loved ones, relatives, and friend. They
get to know the latest news and issues, they can participate in an online
discussions and many more.
In some case, among the respondents that had been interviewed said that
Facebook is an efficient social capitalization tool. It let every single individual to
present themselves, and begin or keep connections with others. It can also join
groups based on their common interest, see what things they have in common,
and learn each others’ hobbies, interests, favorites, and romantic relationships
through their pages.
Facebook Addiction
Is not a recognized clinical disorder. Hundreds of millions of people use
Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family, plan events, receive news, and
play games.
For most, Facebook is a useful and enjoyable way of interacting with others
online. However, some users claim to be addicted or obsessed with Facebook and
have difficulty logging off even after they have been on for hours.

Part IV show the respondents response on how it affect the life of every student
with the question: “How does Facebook usage affect the life of a student?”
Some of the respondents answered that Facebook usage has a positive
effect on their lives. Some of them are using it for educational purposes. They
would like to do some online collaboration with classmates. Other said that using
Facebook boosts their self-esteem even more. In some way, they would feel
belongingness in the community compared to those do not have an accounts. And
it also provides news on what are happening in the real world and even in their
school.
On the other hand, negative effect flourish. Some of them answered that
students who spend much of their time online find it harder to focus in class and
have short attention span. Students are becoming obsessed with social media
sites such as Facebook. Instead of studying they go using Facebook, that is the
reason why they get lower grades or affects their grades as well.
One of the students that we’ve been interviewed telling us if she let her
Facebook usage ruin her life. “Facebook really gets me because I can flush out
feelings but it doesn’t really affect my studies because I am well disciplined and
while my Facebook account is open, I do tons of projects and even loads of
homeworks.” She already more than a thousand friends in her site. She only
accepts and adds friends who is she familiar with. But even with the help of the
site for communicate, she do more than a talk on Facebook, she still prefers to
live among people and socialize with them face-to-face than in social networks.
She likes spending time with her family but also do this with some activeness in
her Facebook account. But still, she doesn’t let this social network to weeken her
relationship with her family, friends and herself.
She is a certified Facebook addict but she never lets her Facebook addiction
gets her personal social life and ruin her studies. She knows to balance things and
Facebook is just her happiness when she fells bored or don’t have anything to do.

Conclusion and Recommendation

Although Facebook poses a lot of advantages today, some would say that
its negative impact could greatly outweigh its benefits. However, we believe that
these impact would only happen in case when an individual is Facebook addicted.
But as people learns to use Facebook in manageable levels, with a correct balance
with their Facebook usage and their physical life, this social media platform could
become a great influence for better physical, emotional, and even spiritual
development.
Time management, commitment, and focus as the attitude help student
decrease the negative effect of Facebook.
