Musical influences She liked Irish music and rock music. She was
a follower of Duran Duran, The Smiths and
Patsy Cline.

The name of the song that I choose is “zombie” and this is performed by the band “The
Cranberries”. This song was written by the singer Dolores O’Riordan, and this song was
published in tribute to two children who were killed in Warrington, England on March 20,
1993 during the war with Ireland.
This songs shows a position of rejection of wars in the world. This reflects about the killing
of innocent people and children especially. On August 31, 1994, just a few weeks after this
song was released, the IRA declared a ceasefire after 25 years of conflict, leading some critics
of The Cranberries to wonder if the IRA was willing to call a truce to make sure the group
did not release any more songs about them.

2. SECOND PART

 What ideas/themes are dealt with in the song?

 What is the song about?
 What do you think the writer of the song is trying to say to the listener? Find at least
three examples of specific parts of the song and the message behind them.
 Do you agree with these ideas?
 What is your reaction to the lyrics?
 What do you feel after listening to the song?
The song was written during the Cranberries’ English tour in 1993 in memory of two boys:
Johnathan Ball and Tim Parry, who were killed in an Irish Republican Army bombing in
Warrington, England in February 1993. Lead singer Dolores claimed that “Zombie” speaks
about the Irish fight for independence that seems to last forever. In the first part of the song,
Dolores shows the cruelty that exists with children and she mentions that another head hangs
lowly and the corpse of a child is slowly taken, all this caused by the violence. When the
song talks about another mother’s breaking, it means that the woman’s life has been
irreparably spoiled and the pain that she feels has taken over her. Now, the desire to obtain
justice is one that dominates it and she will do whatever it takes for the guilty to pay for the
death of her son, even if this means behaving like zombies.
The chorus of the song is an accusation against the violent ones. Dolores suggests that the
minds of humans are upset and they have stopped being people to become zombies. It´s a
brilliant song, and I agree with it and I feel like very sad and very disappointed, because what

the song is about that we have no minds, going around the world killing people for our
freedom. This song shows that nothing happens in our minds since our instincts dominate us.
We have forgotten our moral principles and don´t mind taken the lives of innocent children
for the only purpose of achieving our goals.
