(6) Two equal cylindrical rough rollers at the same level are fixed with their axes horizontal and at a distance d from each other. They rotate in opposite directions about their own axes. A long, straight, uniform rod of weight W rests on top of the rollers with its length perpendicular to the rollers. The coeffi- cient of kinetic friction between the rod and the roller is p. Write down the equation of horizontal motion of the rod, and describe the possible ways that the rod can move. Find the frequency when the motion is oscillatory. A cylinder of radius a rolls down a rough plane inclined at an angle 2 with the horizontal. Let k be the radius of gyration of the cylinder about its axis, and p the coefficient of friction between the cylinder and the plane. (b) Find the frequency of a uniform rod of length d oscillating in a vertical plane about a horizontal axis through one end of the rod. What is the length of the equivalent simple pendulum? A ball rolls down a staircase. It leaves the landing A with a horizon- tal velocity v inches per second. The height of each step is h inches and its width is d inches. If the ball falls on the first step B and then bounces to the second step C, express, in terms of v, h and the coefficient of restitution e, the horizontal distances x, and x3. from the end of the landing A to the points where the ball touches the steps B and C (sce figure). If d > 3v\/2h/g, on which step will the second bounce fall? Here g is the acceleration due to gravity. AC is hori- zontal and BE is perpendicular to AC. The framework rests on A and C and is loaded at D, E and F with vertical loads as shown. Find the reactions at A and C and the stresses in all members of the framework. A uniform equilateral triangle ABC rests in equilibrium in a vertical plane with C against a rough vertical wall and B ona rough horizon- tal floor both of the same coefficient of friction 2. Find the maxi- mum inclination of BC. A triangular lamina ABC of sides AB = 3 ft., BC = 2 ft. and CA = 1:5 ft., rests on a smooth horizontal plane. It is acted on by forces of 4 Ib., 2 Ib. and 6 Ib. along AB, BC and CD respectively, where CD is perpendicular to AB and D is on AB. Find the forces which act at A and C and perpendicular to CA and the force acting along CA so as to keep the lamina in equilibrium. 12. on 6. The side BC is folded down and lies along AB. Find the position of the centre of gravity of the lamina thus folded. An open rectangular tank with vertical section ABCD with bottom BC = 10 ft. is filled with water to a depth of 8 ft. It is then tilted about the lower edge B. Find the inclination of the bottom BC if the ratio of thrusts on the two sides AB and CD is 1: 2. ‘Two rings A and B of equal weight W can slide freely on a rough rod inclined to the horizontal at an angle 0, the coefficient of friction being %. They are connected by a smooth light string of length L, on which a third ring of weight 3W can move freely. Find the distance AB when the system is in limiting equilibrium. A uniform cylinder of density 0-6 and height 15 in. floats with its axis vertical in a cylindrical vessel of horizontal cross section 100 sq.in. containing 5,000 cu.in. of water. Oil, which does not mix with water, is then poured in the vessel. If the density of oil is 0-95, how much oil must be poured in so that the cylinder will rise by 3 in. above its original position. From the given set of 6 numbers 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 form all possible samples of size 2 drawn with replacement and find their means (x). Show that the mean of all the sample means found is equal to the mean of the given set and that the standard error of % is o/\/n, where a is the standard deviation of the given set of numbers.
