Chapter 15: CAD Import and Revit Link

Linking Models from other Disciplines

Exercise 15-2
1. Start Revit 2018

2. Open the file named Architectural_Model.rvt, and save it as


myname_ Architectural_Model.rvt, and close it

3. Open Exercise 15-2.rvt, and save it as myname_Exercise 15-2.rvt

4. Using Link Revit command, link the project myname_ Architectural_Model.rvt.


Set Positioning to Auto - Center to Center. Move the four elevation symbols to
the right places

5. Start Copy/ Monitor command, click Select Link, then select the linked file

6. Using Copy/Monitor tab, Tools panel, click Copy. In the Options Bar, select
Multiple. Hold down [Ctrl] and select all of the grid lines. In the Options Bar,
click Finish, If there is a warning message simply ignore it. Press [Esc] twice

7. The elements have been physically copied into your project

8. We are still in Copy / Monitor command, using Copy/Monitor tab, Tools panel,
click Options button. In the Copy/Monitor Options dialog box, in the Columns
tab, locate Structural Columns, M_Concrete-Square-Column, Size 300 x 300
(this is the used size in the linked model), in the New Type, select
M_Concrete-Rectangular-Column : 450 x 450mm, click OK

9. In the Tools panel, click Copy, don’t select Multiple. Click on one of the
columns. You are copying the same column to your current project. Continue
copying columns. When you are done, click Finish

10. Hide the linked model, in order to see the gridlines and columns

11. Go to South elevation view, you will see levels from the linked model, and two
levels (Level 1, and Level 2) from your model. Stretch the two levels of yours
outside, so you can see them clearly

12. Select Level 2, and set the height to 5500mm

13. Start Copy / Monitor, and select the linked project

14. Click Monitor button, click Level 1, and then click 00 Ground. This way you will
monitor 00 Ground level, without physically copying it to your model. Do the
same thing between Level 2, and 01 First

15. Click Options button, in Level tab, set Offset level = 400, and Prefix = My-,
click OK. Make sure you are selecting Copy button, and click 02 Second

1. Continue copying the other levels up to 06 Roof, using the same way. When
done click Finish. Hide the linked model to see what did you copy

2. Save myname_Exercise 15-2.rvt, and close it

3. Open myname_ Architectural_Model.rvt

4. Go to 00 Ground floor – Dimension plan view

5. Move the F gridline 1000mm to the left

6. Save it, and close it

7. Open myname_Exercise 15-2.rvt, Revit will tell you right away that you need to
make Coordination Review because the linked model has changed

8. Go to Level 1, Unhide the linked file, you can see two F gridlines

9. Start Coordination Review command, and select the linked model

10. Select Modify Grid F to accept the change from the linked model

11. Once you click the OK button, you will see only one gridline F, which is like the
linked model

12. Save and close the file
