“ The Sabbath ”

The word Sabbath simply means rest. The idea of Sabbath or rest is an
important concept in the Bible. In Genesis 1, God created the world in “six
days” and then on the “seventh day” he rested and enjoyed all he had created.
The Lord has given the Sabbath day for our benefit and has commanded us to
keep it holy. Observing the Sabbath shows our commitment to honor and
worship God and keep our covenants. It will bring us closer to the Lord and to
our family. It will give us an eternal perspective and spiritual strength. The
Sabbath also allows us to rest from our physical labors and worship the Lord.
The account in Genesis of creation shows the goal of creation is the Sabbath,
God’s rest on the seventh day.Whenever the word holy appears in the Bible, it
means set apart just for God. In other words, totally devoted to God. A holy
Sabbath, then, isn't just any old time of rest, and it's not just rest for our
physical bodies. God didn't give us the fourth commandment as
encouragement to zone out while watching TV or spend an entire weekend
playing pop music. Doing those things might help us recharge our batteries
physically, but a Sabbath is more than a time of physical rest. It's also a time of
spiritual rest—rest devoted totally to God. Though we aren’t required to, the
idea of putting aside a day each week to focus on all that God has done is a
really good idea. In many traditions, that day is Sunday when Christians go to
church. It’s a day when Christians gather together to especially rejoice in their
new relationship with God and their new relationships with each other. It’s a
day when we remind ourselves of all that God has done for us and encourage
each other to stand firm in Jesus and look forward to the day when he will
come back and we will fully enter God’s Sabbath. God gave us this very special
day so that we can rest from all of our work. From all our daily work. He gave
us this day because He wants us to spend time with our love ones, explore the
wonders of the world, and his creations.
