Reaction Paper

“The Black Cat’

By Edgar Allan Poe

Before I state my reactions and thoughts about this story I will state first the background
of the story. The short story entitled The black Cat was written by Edgar Allan Poe and it was
published under The Saturday evening post in 1843. The story was about a killer who is able to
conceal his crimes. But he was so guilty of the acts he have done and push into revealing
himself. I think the story has a theme of violence, it’s very clear because the story revolves a mad
man and done serious acts including killing his pet and his wife. The story started with his wife
and pet, their life was going well until alcohol takes his life over, He want mad and abusive to
his wife. What I can say in the first part is, alcohol can change a Human into different person
when it is abused and too much. It affects the our brain and soon to our entire body which leads
us into madness.

In later of the story I was horrified when he got so mad and irritated that he kill his pet cat
which for me was very horrible. I love cats which makes me sadden about the story but
nevertheless it was just a story and it was made up by the author. After killing his cat his house
was burned and all of his belongings were destroyed except to the image left of a black cat. He
starts to think that the cat was the reason behind all of his problems. Which lead me into the
conclusion that Edgar Allan Poe uses a cat in the story specifically a black cat because in the
superstitious beliefs a black cat was associated with bad luck. But of course its not because of the
black cat it’s because of his addiction to alcohol which takes his life over. He was haunted by the
crime he had done but after a month he found a new cat like his pet but with a white splash on it.
Later when he was almost tripped but the cat he went mad and almost killed it with an axe but
his wife defend the animal so he killed her wife, and he hide the body to avoid being traced.
When the body was found by the police the cat missing cat was there standing in the head of the
corpse.

All in all my conclusion was too much alcohol will lead you into madness and you’ll end
up hurting your loved ones. Also think this also reflects the life of Edgar Allan Poe Because ive
read he also uses alcohol as a solution to his problem but in fact this will lead him to bad. The
story also show the mental and psychological problems of the man in the story and also thre
author twist it with supernatural side which makes me hook to the story. The story was
mysterious and violent yet it gives us lesson in our life and It was a nice story to read on
