Publisher’s Note
Within the publishing industry, unique article numbers are
emerging as an easy and efficient way to cite journal articles.
Article numbering has already been successfully rolled out to
Elseviers multidisciplinary open access journal Heliyon and has
been well received by the academic community. Based on that
positive feedback, we are now introducing article numbering for
Chemical Engineering Science: X.
What is an article number?
Unique article numbers are an abbreviated form of the articles
DOI - digital object identifier. Citing an article with an article num-
ber is very simple: the article number is used instead of the page
range in the citation.
While journal volumes and issue numbers will remain in place,
the introduction of article numbers makes page numbers redun-
dant, opening up a number of benefits for the journal and readers.

 More flexibility: PDFs can now be generated in any font size
and articles can be any length. This allows online platforms
to tailor the content, for example resize it based on the
device used to access it.
 Improved accessibility: The new, flexible format makes the
content more accessible for people with disabilities as they
can change the font to suit their needs.
 Increased content options: In online collections and
Special Issues, articles can now be placed in any order.
We hope the introduction of article numbering in this journal
will allow readers to benefit from the flexible presentation format
and all the additional benefits on offer, encouraging browsing and
helping readers identify more quickly papers most relevant to their
research interests.
