Small Farms and Alternative Enterprises Program Impact Statement

In 2009, Robert moved to Florida to pursue his dream of maintaining and farming
land. After purchasing the land, Robert found there was much about the farming
community and guidelines he did not know. Despite his best efforts researching and
speaking to fellow farmers, Robert became overwhelmed and considered giving up his
dream and selling his land. Though his mind was made up, a neighbor mentioned a
university run extension program that may be of interest to Robert. With little knowledge
of such programs, and not much to lose, Robert registered for and attended the first of a
series of conferences by Small Farms and Alternative Enterprises Program. The latter is
an extension of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Science, or
IFAS.
Through the Small Farms and Alternative Enterprises Program, Robert was able
to attend a number of conferences where he began to establish a rapport and network
with farmers from all around the state of Florida. Further, Robert received access to
resources such as food safety guidelines and training, policy council and marketing/
management approaches. Upon completion of the program series, Robert gained
confidence and access to the tools needed for the success of his new farm land. Using
these tools, Robert was able to implement sustainable and environmentally friendly
farming techniques, thereby avoiding many of the mistakes first time farmers make.
Moreover, as part of the program Robert developed and committed to a food safety
plan. This measure allowed Robert to stand out from other local competitors. Today,
Robert continues to successfully and sustainably produce resources for his state, and
for his community. His success has resulted in an increase to his local economy as
many of his produce is sold to local restaurants and markets. Robert’s experience has
also worked to increase the number of attendees to the Small Farms and Alternative
Enterprises Program. As word of his experience and success travels, more and more
farmers seek the tools and education provided by the extension program.

Since 2009, more than 5,000 people have attended the Small Farms and
Alternative Enterprises Program. Like Robert, 80% of attendees have committed to
implementing a food safety plan, with 85% of attendees also reporting that what they
have learned is applicable to their own operation. The information and resources
provided by the program have led to boosts in local economies, preservation of
agricultural land, healthier communities, and an increase in fresh food. The program
aims to educate and guide beginning farmers like Robert and so many more, to improve
the quality of local farm land produce, and the economy. With nearly 116 farms
declaring bankruptcy per year, it is no surprise that facing new challenges can be
intimidating for growers and farmers. With guidance and access to a network of experts,
people like Robert and many more can succeed and create a positive impact on their
community.
