Hazard Rating
The relevant Hazard Rating categories are:

HAZARD RATING DEFINITION (Consequence Category: Harm to People)

Slight health effects: Not affecting work performance or causing disability,
1
e.g. non toxic dusts (as an acute hazard)
Minor health effects: Agents capable of minor health effects which are
2 reversible, e.g. irritant agents, defatting agents, many food poisoning
bacteria
Major health effects: Agents capable of irreversible health damage without
3 loss of life, e.g. noise, poor manual handling tasks, hand/arm vibration,
chemicals causing systemic effects, sensitisers
One to three fatalities or Permanent Total Disability: Agents capable of
irreversible damage with serious disability or death, e.g. corrosives, known
4 human carcinogens (small exposed population), sensitisers where the onset
of sensitisation threatens continuing employment, heat, cold, psychological
stress
Multiple fatalities: Agents with the potential to cause multiple fatalities, e.g.
5 chemicals with acute toxic effects (hydrogen sulphide, carbon monoxide),
known human carcinogens (large exposed population)
The following health hazards should be a primary concern:

 Health hazards which may cause fatalities either in the short or long term, e.g. agents with the potential to cause fatality(ies) from infectious diseases
(short term), or carcinogenic substances (long term);

 Health hazards causing (occupational) diseases which could expose the company to substantial future social and monetary liabilities, e.g. noise
induced hearing loss, repetitive strain injury, psychological stress;

 Health hazards with the potential of causing ‘minor health effects’ which could cause severe business disruption to a company, e.g. a major food
poisoning outbreak on an offshore platform.

Refer to the Business Specific Health Hazard Inventory for further examples of health hazards relevant to a particular business.

Health Hazard Examples of situations or activities in which the Harmful health effects from over Consequence Likelihood - L RAM Risk Rating

water supplies, cutting oil/water emulsions, pneumonia (severest form of infection
domestic and safety showers, firefighting - may be fatal), dependent on the
systems, high pressure cleaning of fouled strain of legionella bacteria
systems, car wash machines
