PROJECT TITLE: Aerodynamic Performance Analysis of Co-Flow Jet Airfoil

SYNOPSIS

Airfoil is the most fundamental aerodynamic element of aircraft. An aircraft wing is

formed by a series of airfoils stacked along the span. Therefore, enhancing the aerodynamic
performance of the airfoil by modifying its geometry is carried out in this project.

The co-flow jet airfoil is designed with an injection slot near the leading edge and a
suction slot near the trailing edge on the airfoil suction surface. A high-speed jet is injected
tangentially into the main flow, and in the meanwhile the same amount of mass flow is drawn
into the suction slot.

In this project, NACA 23024, NACA 0012, and NACA 66206 airfoils are converted
into co-flow jet airfoil and the aerodynamic performance of baseline airfoil is compared with
respective co-flow jet airfoil. The co-flow jet airfoil in this project is designed for a specified
Mach number, which is assumed to be the average take-off or landing Mach number for wide
range of aircraft. Then the performance of the co-flow jet airfoils is analysed for the change of
free stream Mach number to understand the behaviour of the airfoil when it is subjected to the
Mach number lesser than the designed Mach number and when it is subjected to the Mach
number which is greater than the free stream Mach number.

The NACA 23024 co-flow jet airfoil was found to increase the coefficient of lift by
19.62% and increase the stalling angle of attack by 13.33%, while the NACA 0012 co-flow jet
airfoil was found to increase the coefficient of lift by 16.6% and stalling angle of attack by
12.5%, and NACA 66206 co-flow jet airfoil was found to increase the coefficient of lift by
35.48% and angle of attack by 33.33%. Also, the co-flow jet airfoil’s performance was
increased with the lowering of Mach number lesser than the designed Mach number and the
performance was reduced when the free stream Mach number was increased beyond the
designed Mach number.
