It cannot be denied that the culture of the Philippines is very rich.

It tells us how our ancestors

lived through all the various periods and reached the present time. This can be shown through artefacts
and relics in the form of documents, furniture, or other forms.

Communication back then, written, to be specific, was not so different. There was a form of
writing system with its own symbols and rules. In the Philippines, Baybayin was the pre-colonial writing
script of the islands.

Baybayin is slowly getting famous, mostly with the youth. Teenagers are trying to learn and use
this writing system. A movie even highlighted the use of baybayin throughout the story. And with this,
the members thought that taking pride on our national pre-colonial writing system is not enough.
Surely, there are other forms of writing systems that was used back then.

In Pampanga, during the 16th Century, as stated by Tauchi Yonesaburo in his book Toukikou,
there was this writing system called “writing of the Kingdom of Luzon” or Kulitan. Sulat Kapampangan
and Pamagkulit are other names for the writing system Kulitan, given by the Spaniards in the 17th and
18th centuries.

Usage of the script was said to have declined in the 19th century, but was revived by
Kapampangan writers led by Aurelio Tolentino to write anti-Spanish and American propaganda during
their respective eras. As time passed, the usage of Kulitan has also dropped.

With this, the researchers want to dig deeper in the history of the Kulitan writing system.
Research will be conducted at libraries around Pampanga, to be specific, the library in Holy Angel
University and the City Library. This will give the researchers enough sources and information in writing
the history of the Kulitan script.

The goal of this research is not only to take pride on our own writing system but to also help our
people understand its history and province deeper.

This research will tackle the history of Kulitan through readings of various sources and
interviews from experts. This will not tackle the use and rules of the writing script.
