Introduction to Bharti Foundation

Bharti foundation is the philanthropic hand of Bharti Group and was established in the year
2000. Their vision is to help the underprivileged children and young individuals of our
country so that they realize their maximum potential and make their future healthy. Bharti
foundation has a mission to bring sustainable changes in the children education through use
of technology and to create education programs that produce best results in the ground. They
have a goal to improve quality of education across rural parts of India and to improve
accessibility to schools for the students. They also deliver education and training
opportunities to the youth, so that they become employable and develop their future.

Bharti foundation was established under the Laws of India with a "Deed of Trust" and got a
status of charitable trust. All the educational programs run by Bharti foundation have a close
partnership with corporations, policy makers, the government, local communities and the
general public. The aim of these programs is development of children by educating and
making them employable. Their intent is to develop a scalable and sustainable education
archetypal that can be simulated on a large scale by the government, educational institutions
and like-minded organizations.

As the start of their journey, Bharti foundation focused on the rural education so they started
the Satya Bharti school program and launched it in the state of Punjab. These schools were
built on the land provided by the Panchayats and got popular with the name of Greenfields
Schools as the land is surrounded with Farms and village Greenery.

After Punjab, the foundation moved to Rajasthan and partnered with the state government to
launch a new model. This model is an initiative to adopt existing schools and help the school
with financial, management and operations requirements. Under this scheme 49 government
schools and 12 elementary schools were adopted. Currently Satya Bharti school program is
marking its presence across 13 states of India and improving the education system of rural
India.

A Small video Sharing the vision and impact of the program on children of our society:

Bharti Foundation Impacting Lives

Satya Bharti School Programme

The Satya Bharti School Programme offers free education, including meals, school uniforms
and educational materials to underprivileged children who are unable to afford education.
There are 254 schools from elementary to senior secondary in six states of India i.e.
Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. (Bharti Foundation)

This curriculum includes both indoor and outdoor learning assignments and mainly focuses
on English language, Computer skills, life skills and communication, as well as leadership
and vocational training further in higher classes. It conducts best practices from schools
across the country and child-centric and value-based academics. The curriculum is based on
guidelines provided by the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005 and is aligned with
CBSE and all other state board guidelines. (Bharti Foundation, 2017)

The program works with state governments and is based on three key pillars of intervention,
which are also linked to generate successful employment and entrepreneurship opportunities:

1. Engage students: In addition to ensuring learning, the programme nurtures students as

responsible citizens by focusing on holistic development, inculcating life skills like
communication, leadership and values. Students are connected to communities through
campaigns and community service, which encourages them to engage in real life
challenges to emerge as leaders and agents of change.

2. Engage parents and the local community: Schools hold regular parent-teacher meetings,
recruit local teachers and entrust mid-day meals to parents. In addition, each year for
seven days the local community uses the school to teach local art, craft, folklore and other
subjects. Students undertake community development campaigns around issues that
concern them. Students have stopped child marriages, ensured that widows get proper
place in society and have removed the stigma of untouchability from their village.

3. Engage local youth: Local youth are hired as school teachers and receive mentoring,
capacity-building and skill-development training. After a selection process, recruited
teachers are provided induction and training opportunities to deliver the curriculum in the
best manner possible. Highly qualified and experienced in-house trainers provide year-
round mentoring and training support. (Bharti Foundation, 2017)
Satya Bharti Learning Centres Program

According to a survey conducted by the government of India in 2009, it was found that there
were around 8 million children between the ages of 6 to 13 years who are out of the school
children (OOSC), means that these children are not going to the schools or they had drop out
from the school because of various reasons.

So, to address this issue in 2012 Bharti Foundation joins the hands with the Education Above
All Foundation, which a Qatar based foundation group. In this Bharti Foundation will work
together in implement their Educate a Child (EAC) program, in which they will identify these
children & help them in enrolling in government schools and provide them with age
appropriate schooling. (Bharti Foundation)

Satya Bharti Learning Centres are mostly located in remote locations or in those tough areas
where the children were not able to access the schools. So, for fully implementation of the
program they bring together all the stakeholders and discuss the problem with them in order
to create a right education and learning program. This program receives a positive response
from everyone and the problem of child labour was also overcome.

This program is seen successful because the numbers of centres opened by the foundation are
increasing year by year in all parts of the India. The enrolment of children is also increasing
and the dropout rates are also decreasing significantly. Because of the partnership with the
State Government it has helped the program to reach in the villages of Rajasthan, Jharkhand
and Madhya Pradesh. The program has also joined the hands with the Panchayats of many
villages for fully implementation of the program and also to keep monitoring the program.

The second phase of the program with various modifications is also implemented. In this the
program will reach the parents to enrol children to school, helping in creating a learning
environment and finally providing facilities like toilets for girls, display boards, library etc.
There were also many of the centres were closed in various parts of the country because the
dropout rates have decreased and enrolment of the children have increased in these areas. So,
because of that there is no need for the centres to operate as the targets were met. (Bharti

Other Initiatives
Satya Bharti Abhiyan
This initiative is taken by the Bharti foundation to provide the toilets in the government
schools and also improve the rural sanitation facilities in Punjab. It was mainly started in the
district of Ludhiana of Punjab. This is also inspired by the Honourable Pm Narendra Modi to
strengthen the Government’s initiative and its area of improvement is rural sanitation. In this
program the Bharti Foundation invested 100 Cr’s for making new toilets for the next 3 years.
It’s also includes constructing the toilets for the girls and also for the government schools
which previously it is not existed.

For the rural sanitation, the students of the Satya Bharti Abhiyan are reaching out every
villager to convince the other villagers to use the households’ toilets and telling about the
benefits of healthy sanitation. The collaboration with the government schools and. other
partners is aim to reach out to all the villages of Ludhiana. In India the one of the biggest
problem of sanitation is the lack of public awareness on the dangers of open defecation. This
initiative is much focuses on the development of infrastructure on the awareness and to

Airtel Delhi Half Marathon

Marathons are a wonderful trigger to do your bit for charity. The Airtel Delhi Half Marathon
supports the idea of ‘Run for a Cause’. The Airtel Delhi Half Marathon (ADHM) is an
effective platform to bring together corporates, individuals, employees and students of
schools and colleges to raise funds and enjoy the marathon run. It also lends an opportunity to
all Civil Society Organisations - CSOs/ NGOs to ‘raise friends and therefore raise funds’.
(Bharti Foundation)
Impact of CSR Initiatives on the society
Through its various programs, Bharti Foundation is trying to ensure quality education for
children in rural India. It is setting up primary, elementary and senior secondary schools;
taking lessons and good practices learnt to the government schools to improve the overall
quality of the schooling experience for students; and providing remedial education to out-of-
school children in order to mainstream them into regular schools. In all its interventions, it is
providing robust training and mentoring to the teachers and developing a brigade of well-
equipped, learned and knowledgeable resources. The ultimate aim is to raise the bar of
literacy and education standards in the country.

In terms of impact, schools and other programs of the Foundation have reached out to over
250,000 beneficiaries in more than 750 villages. The school program impacts students
through quality education resulting in enhanced learning levels, exposure to English,
computers, life skills, communication and leadership. Rural young people are employed as
teachers (57 percent females) and are trained to act as role models for girls. Calling on
mothers as midday meal vendors is one example of the financial empowerment and inclusion
of women. Interventions with the government schools are resulting in enhanced teacher
quality, exposure to students and improvement of the overall quality of schooling. (Bharti
Foundation, 2017)

Gyanesh a shy boy who joined Satya Bhatri School, Bhojpur who travel daily 12 km to reach
school every day with 3km on foot the distance he travel daily could have discouraged him
but his thirst for knowledge motivated him to reach school with smile on his face. Gyanesh
adapted to school environment and his curiosity to learn new things drove him to do well in
academics and extra –curricular activities. School teachers helped him to score good grades
and built confidence in him. His efforts, hard work and passion to learn and gain knowledge
turned into a big achievement for him as he emerged as topper in the entire district of
Shahjahanpur in class 12 exams and scored a remarkable 92.2% and was awarded by
Honourable Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Sh. Yogi Adityanath which made a proud
moment for teachers and parent. Gyanesh is continuing his education and studying B.Sc.
from Delhi University (Bharti Foundation)

The Satya Bharti Learning Centre Program has impacted around 60,590 Out of the School
Children (OOSC) since the program has started. The program has also surpassed the target of
48,000 children set by its partner EAC (Educate a Child). The program has also reached
around 38 Educational Backward Blocks in 10 Districts across Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand
and Rajasthan.

Vikram Singh, who was an Out of the School Children (OOSC) once, got himself enrolled in
a Bharti Centre in Rajasthan. After that he took part in a Science Quiz competition and even
won the competition. 10 out of the school children who joined the program were admitted to
Navodaya and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya schools in Barmer. The persons who were
volunteering for the program in the Learning centres in Rajasthan and Jharkhand were given
certificates from government officials and were also appreciated by everyone. (Bharti Foundation)

The Satya Bharti Quality Support Program has so far received a great deal of positive
response and the program area has grown to almost ten times its size compared to the last
final introduction of international fora through the International School Award, opportunities
for the senior students to explore skill-building initiatives, the creation of a process manual of
the program, motivational awards and merits systems for teachers and students and
augmenting existing resources with external resources has been the benchmark of this
program. Under this program there are 369 (Schools Primary, Elementary & Senior
secondary) in the 9 States (Delhi, Goa, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan,
Andhra Pradesh, Telangana & Jharkhand) and 1,55,437 Students are getting benefits from
this program. Out of total number of students 50% are Girls, whereas 69% are SC/ST/OBC
and for teaching the program has 5,822 Teachers.

The EY study found that: family members of 91% households (with children studying at
Satya Bharti Schools) regularly wash their hands before and after meals as compared to
62.2% households whose children go to other schools. Over 3,000 students of our schools
have successfully convinced their families to build toilets in their homes.
Issues and Challenges

The challenge in India today is primarily that of lack of quality education and teachers in
rural India, leading to many out-of-school children and low learning levels. The school
program is attempting to create a quality education model with local young people as teachers
through intense training and a creative curriculum at a cost equivalent to the government
system. The school curriculum has been designed to reach out to the learning capabilities of
each child. It also incorporates the interaction of the students with their own surroundings
through community campaigns which are further empowering parents and communities with
new thoughts and views. Most critical success factors are ensuring holistic development of
children beyond age- and grade-appropriate learning levels, Process-driven approach
ensuring optimum quality standards in all schools, Support from community and support
from local governments. (Wise Initiatives)

The objective is to provide a model for quality education in rural India and impact the
government schooling system through the lessons and good practices learnt from the project.
It is creating a pool of trained teachers who are being absorbed by the government system,
thereby improving the quality of education delivery in respective states. The Foundation
intends to ensure that children are provided with a quality education to become employable
and responsible citizens of tomorrow.

The major challenge faced by the Satya Bharti Learning Centre Program was that to create a
right atmosphere. So, firstly when they started in Rajasthan there were many people who
don’t want to send their children to school because they were involved in other activities or
working in low wages. Many of these children were girls and many parents also feel insecure
about sending them to schools.

So, in order to deal with the problem, they firstly collaborated with the existing system so that
there is enough availability of resources and system. Secondly, they developed the existing
human resource so that their activities still continue after their withdrawal. The purpose of
use of the existing infrastructure of government is that they can provide the age appropriate
education to the children.

There are many obstacles which are emerging while considering successful CSR strategies in
making successful, intricacy in integrating CSR with organizational values and practices, the
lack of organizational buy-in and assurance to CSR. Another factor which hinders CSR is the
lack of time and financial resources to follow CSR practices are directly related to the above
three. When Bharti Airtel finds it difficult to make Satya Bharti Quality Support Program for
CSR or its association with core organizational operations, it will be averse to commit and
allocate resources or time to such practices. Moreover, these obstacles also point to another
set of findings in good teachers manage regulatory impacts, reduce risk, and respond to
stakeholders concerns, and to a lesser extent as a strategic source of competitive advantage.

Communication Strategy

The delivery method for communications should reflect the diverse needs of stakeholders.
For this reason, a web-based approach is more desirable and is becoming more common. The
flexibility of communicating via the internet allows global stakeholders greater access to
information and allows companies to update information in real time. CSR reporting via the
web also allows for better customization of message delivery, with richer content and more
engaging multimedia options. Company websites are seen by the public as key sources of
information. Therefore, they should be seen by corporations as a primary means of
communicating their CSR activities. As the digital age progresses, full CSR reporting via the
web will become even more critical to competition and success.

Bharti foundation has partnerships with NGOs, corporate institutions and government bodies
so they collaborate and deliver benefits to the un-served by using best strategy, technology
and expertise. Bharti foundation has a relationship with more than 150 corporate which
contributes financial, material and knowledge for the philanthropic cause. These
contributions varied in forms:

Financial: The companies are generating revenue and the interest earned on the revenue is
partially utilized to meet the operational expenses.

Technical: Corporate bodies and individuals with IT skills are helping the foundation to
create IT infrastructure, providing education material, teachers training and hygiene in the
schools.
Scale & Reach: The national organizations, Government institutions and state government
department had helped the Bharti foundation to reach people and perform activities in huge
number.

Individual Partners: Employees of Bharti group are contributing through payroll donation
and volunteering in a unique ACT (A Caring Touch) Initiative.
The Airtel Delhi Half Marathon (ADHM) is used as an effective platform to bring together
corporates, individuals, employees and students of schools and colleges to run for a cause and
raise funds by enjoying marathon run. Over the last nine years 7207 employees from 82
corporates had participated in the cause and supported the foundation. (Bharti Foundation, 2017)

As a comprehensive communication strategy, Bharti is reaching internal and external

stakeholders i.e. International and national donors, partners, government officials, community
members and parents. Bharti is approaching its stakeholders via 3 levels of communication
channels:

international events, seminars, conferences and motivating people
with their philanthropic practices via dissemination of data and achievements to the
world.

reports, announcements and press releases, articles and research papers on print and
electronic media.
3. Publications- Bharti is engaged with Voice for change newsletters that focus on the
studies and data. Bharti every year releases its Annual report with overall program
