One of the many things that I cannot do in life is to paint.

In the past, I tried to paint but then I

realized that I don’t have the talent, the determination, and the patience for it. So I just settled sa pagiging
tagaappreciate and tagatingin na lang ng artworks ng iba. I really admire people who can paint but there
are times na sa tingin ko, pare-pareho lang yung paintings. I mean, yes, they are beautiful, but what makes
them different among the other thousands of beatiful paintings? So there’s this one painting that I liked
and fascinated with, and it is the Starry Night painted by Vincent Van Gogh.

I think we’re all familiar with this painting naman na. Starry Night is one of the most popular
paintings in the world. It is an abstract landscpae painting, which shows a small hillside village under a
starry night. It was painted by Vincent Van Gogh, which is also known as the tortured genius. Van Gogh is
a Dutch painter and he is a neo-impressionist painter. He uses art as a window to his mind and soul instead
of using it as a window to the world. Ang usual subject niya is nature, so he usually paints outdoors. So
habang tinitingnan niya yung subject niya, he paints it. What’s so unique about the Starry Night is that he
painted it within the asylum using his memory. The scene for the starry night was inspired by the scene
outside his bedroom’s windom in the asylum. He looked out the window, may isang star na nagshashine
ng sobra doon, and he decided to paint it. Since hindi siya pinapayagan na magpaint sa bedroom niya, kasi
may suicidal tendencies siya and he might eat paint to poison himself, his studio is separated. Di rin naman
siya laging nagpepaint doon bc there are times na hindi siya pinapayagan kapag nagkakaroon siya ng
psychotic episodes. For Van Gogh, this painting is a failure. He said it himself in one of his letters sa brother
niya. Sabi niya, this painting is going to be famous because of it being a failure. Little did he know that this
painting will be viewed as a masterpiece after his death. Van Gogh died at the age of 37, a year after he
painted this. He committed suicide.

during it’s exhibit in the Museum of the Modern Art in New York.
