Newspaper design
Subhead= small headline placed within an article Standing head= text that appears consistently
in a publication (opinion, letters to the editor…)
Infographic = any map, diagram or graph that helps analyze or describe something
Ears= Space at the top of the front page on each side of the newspaper's nameplate. Usually
boxed in with weather news, index to pages or an announcement of special feature
Folio= name, date, page number, at the top or bottom of every issue
Modular design=enclosing all stories into rectangles and snapping the pieces together into a
grid
DOUBLESPEAK=Deliberately euphemistic, ambiguous, or obscure language.
SLANT - refers to a particular way of presenting information so that it appeals to certain groups in
society • an important aspect of slant is the use of different types of vocabulary to present certain
information in either a positive or negative light, this use of vocabulary is particularly apparent with
emotive vocabulary, such as brutal attacker vs. brave fighter
bias - OPPOSITE OF OBJECTIVITY, has strong negative connotations • journalism can never be completely
objective and neutral
Types of headlines
front page headlines • simplicity, informality and impact • it must be a clear signal; swiftly readable;
economical in editorial, production, and reading time, and in newsprint space; proportionate to the
news; flexible
inside headlines • have to make readers want to read the articles, usually once they have bought the
paper
headlines and secondary headlines (subheads) • tend to be written by sub-editors rather than the
journalist who wrote the article
clickbait • on the Internet • content whose main purpose is to attract attention and encourage visitors
to click on a link to a particular web page
Listener - A person or a group of people who form the target audience of radio programmes
Radio broadcaster - a person who presents or announces programmes over radio for the public
BROADCAST - any communication or transmission of any message or signal to the public through
electronic apparatus
PRERECORDED - The programme recorded on magnetic tape, phonographic discs or compact disc for
broadcasting it later.
SCRIPT - The written copy of the words to be spoken during a radio programme.
