Lise Meitner

Lise Meitner
Lise Meitner, a scientist, was one of the many people who worked on radioactive and nuclear

things during the 1900s. She was born in 1878 in Austria. She also discovered the radioactive element

protactinium. She later died in 1968 after doing many things in her lifetime.

Lise Meitner’s parents were a lawyer and a homemaker. Once she got older, she tried to get into

The University of Vienna in 1901. She had a tutor to help her get into the university. In 1907, she moved

to Berlin after earning a doctorate in physics. She tried to get into the Kaiser Institute and was going to

be declined, however Otto Ilahn needed an assistant to work with him. Because of this, she was allowed

to work in the school, but had to do so in the basement because of the no girls allowed rule.

After discovering the element protactinium, she was the first women to become a physics

professor there. She was forced to move to leave her home because of World War Two. Since she was

Jewish, she had to leave her home because of the Nazi threat. She continued to work until her death in

1968.

Because of her and other scientist’s work, many other people made radioactive and nuclear

things to help in wars and other things. Because of her going to do things like this, many other young

women and girls were able to go do things like Lise did. She was able to set a pathway for other people

to do great things.
