MGMT1050 UC Library Assignment

Week 4 Assignment 1

Take the free career skills inventory quiz at “http://www.truity.com/test/holland-code-career-

test”

Write a one half page reflection paper. Analyze and describe your career type as well as your
score summary. What is your interest level for the six areas? Did anything surprise you? Why or
why not? Identify and discuss the top three careers you found based on your primary interest
area. Assess and explain how you plan to utilize this new information.

My career type is “Thinker.” People who are “Thinkers” generally prefer working with rational / logical
ideas and theories. Many people in this category enjoy science and learning about the world and how things
work. They want to discover new ideas and perform research to explore those ideas. I am not very surprised
about my results, I work in IT so Thinking, Building, and being creative are already things I am interested in
and things that I have to do!

My interest level scores for the six areas:

 Building – 63
 Thinking – 100
 Creative – 40
 Helping – 0
 Persuasion – 15
 Organization – 0

This score definitely explains my career type! For me, I like thinking about ways to do stuff then personally
being involved in the testing process, which in this case would be the “Building” area. Creative goes hand in
hand with Building and Thinking. So I believe that is why those two other areas are much higher than the
remaining interest areas! While I am a helpful person, I do not want to spend a majority of my time and energy
helping people. I would go out of my way to help somebody, but due to past experiences I am unable to help the
same person with the same problems over and over again. It is too taxing on my mind, mood, and energy.

Persuasion is an incredibly important part of human interaction. While I don’t want to persuade people for
hours on end about stuff, I recognize that it is important and is required which is why it is likely the fourth
highest area on my list! Organization is important, but I feel like it is less important than the other areas on this
list. I believe I already know the fundamentals to being decently organized so it isn’t something I am very
interested in.

The top three careers I found that I am interested in. I obtained the careers through
“https://www.truity.com/search-careers/advanced” I filtered to include “Building, Thinking, and Creating” and
excluded the remaining three. I then pared down the last column to only include only things I would be
interested in. Three of the most interesting to me were:

 Architect
 Chemical Engineer
 Computer or Information Research Scientist

Architect – This is something I was interested in doing during my middle school years. I was more into Art back
then and the thought of designing buildings appealed to me. While it isn’t very appealing to me now, it was still in the
top three most interesting on the list I obtained. I do not plan to do anything with this information as it is the lowest of
the three I have selected and I do not see my future in Architecture.

Chemical Engineer – This is by far the most interesting to me out of the three. Since I currently already work in IT
and Architecture is a past dream of mine, this easily catches my eye the most. This field is extremely varied, has
incredible growth / research / discovery opportunities. Chemical engineers mix Biology, Physics, math, and of course
Chemistry to solve many of Humanity’s needs. This field has always been an extreme interest of mine since I hit the
eight grade and borrowed a book from the library about Carbon. Since then Chemistry has always made my imagination
go wild! Even now I would not mind one bit if this were my career. But I am very far behind in chemistry and catching up
now would take quite a long time. I wont do anything with this newfound knowledge either. I am more suited for the
last choice.

Computer or Information Research Scientist – This is the career that lines up the closest to my line or work. Like
Chemical Engineering, this field also has a lot of variety. It solves problems in the digital (and sometimes analog) world.
This ranges from designing new coding languages to solve and satisfy convenience, automation, and efficiency needs. It
can also provide entertainment for the billions of people on the planet. As consumer computing power needs grows,
Computer or Information Research Scientists can better optimize or design programs to be more efficient to stay with or
ahead of those needs. This is my likely route of the three choices. I plan on learning coding languages in order to help
automate or make my current job more efficient and save time for both my co-workers and myself. I also have
aspirations to create my own games and apps to act as an income boost. I likely won’t be part of the group that
“Publishes my findings in an academic journal” but this broad title could certainly apply to me at some point in my life!
