Practice Problems –Set 1

1. Data is taken on the height and shoe size of a sample of students from an engineering
college. Height is coded by 3 values: 1 (short), 2 (average), 3(tall) and shoe size is
coded by 3 values 1 (small), 2 (average), 3 (large). The joint counts are given in the
following table. [2]

a. Find the marginal pmf of shoe and height.

b. Find the conditional Distribution (Shoe/Height).

2. Random variable X is distributed with the following pdf:

Fine the value of the constant A.

3. If the number of claims handled daily by an insurance company is Poisson

distributed with an average of 5, what is the probability that 2 days has less than 6
claims?

4. A random sample of size n1 = 16 is selected from a normal population with a mean

of 75 and a standard deviation of 8. A second random sample of size n2 = 9 is taken
from another normal population with mean 70 and standard deviation 12. Let X1
and X2 be the two sample means. Find

a. The probability that X1 - X2 exceeds 4

b. The probability that 3.5 ≤ (X1 – X2) ≤ 5.5.

5. A company claims that the mean weight of food packets it manufactures is 500gms,
with a standard deviation of 55gms. The hypothesis Ho: μ ≥ 500 is tested against H1:
μ < 500 for a random sample of 25 food packets.

If the company has observed that x = 487.6 and rejected the null hypothesis, what
is the type I error probability?
6. Suppose the National Transportation Safety Board wants to examine the safety of
compact cars, midsize cars, and full-size cars. It collects a sample of three for each
of the treatments (cars types). Using the hypothetical data provided below, test
whether the mean pressure applied to the drivers head during a crash test is equal
for each types of car. Use α = 5 %.
