The diagram illustrates the average amount of carbon dioxide (𝐶𝑂2 ) released by a person in
the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy, and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Firstly, Portugal and Italy each shows a general increase in their average 𝐶𝑂2 emissions per
person from 1967 to 2007. Portugal sketched a steady increase from 1967 to 1987 whereas
Italy, shows a greater increase of its 𝐶𝑂2 emission from 1967 to 1977 as compared to its 𝐶𝑂2
emission in 1977 to 1987. Likewise, from 1987 to 1997, Portugal showed a steeper increase
in its 𝐶𝑂2 emissions compared to Italy. However, the average 𝐶𝑂2 emissions for both
countries sketched a constant rate prior to 2007.
In contrary, United Kingdom shows a general decrease in its average 𝐶𝑂2 emissions per
person from 1967 to 2007. This pattern is followed by Sweden after sketching a great
increase of its 𝐶𝑂2 emissions from 1967 to 1977. Sweden then showed a steep decrease of
𝐶𝑂2 emissions from 1977 to 1987 whereas a slight decrease is showed by United Kingdom in
that same period. Both countries then showed a constant decrease from 1987 to 2007.
To sum up, the average Carbon Dioxide (𝐶𝑂2 ) emissions per person are highly affected by
the population of a country.
