India stands third in terms of biotechnology in the region of Asia-pacific.
Most of the biotech
companies of India have expertise in Agri-biotech and biopharmaceuticals. India is the producer of vaccine of Hepatitis b. government has encouraged start-ups, researchers, SME’s and academicians to work in the field of biotechnology. BIRAC and KIHT have collaborated to provide required facility to those in the biotechnological field for testing and standardize . Following are the top leaders in biotechnology sector in India:
1. Biocon: Biocon is a biopharmaceutical company that export its products to America
and Europe. It deals in small and novel molecules, formulations and biosimilars. Biocon is all ready to enter in industry 4.0 as it has created large fermentation capabilities to support manufacturing of immunosuppressants. Biocon has been using modern engineering which has much more sophisticated designs for fermentation. 2. Serum institute of India: The company deals in manufacturing of immunobiological vaccines and drugs. The company is trying to develop an intra nasal vaccine for swine flu. It has also developed anti rabies agent. 3. Wockhardt: wockhardt manufactures products in biopharmaceutical formulation, nutrition and vaccine. Besides US and Europe, wockhardt has manufactured recombinant human insulin. Wockhardt has facilities for API and Formulation to cater bacteria, yeast and mammalian life forms. 4. GlaxoSmithKline pharmaceutical limited: It is amongst the oldest biotechnological company of India. It provides wide range of medicines for cardiovascular diseases, oncology, respiratory disease etc. the company also manufactures vaccines for cancer, hepatitis, tetanus, chickenpox etc. GSK uses modern technology in terms of biology and engineering. 5. Bharat serum and vaccines limited: It is an Indian company that is growing at a very faster rate. The company provides biotechnological products in the areas of nephrology, hematology and critical care. Products like monoclonal, antifungal, anesthetics related drugs and equine immunological antitoxins are produced by the company. 6. Rasi seeds limited: the company manufactures Rasi hybrid seeds. It is the leader in providing hybrids in cotton, maize, millet and few vegetables. The company uses genetic engineering and few breeding technologies for producing hybrid seeds. They use in-built abiotic and biotic environment in order to provide suitable conditions for hybrid agriculture. India has not yet entered industry 4.0 in biotechnological sector due to lack of connectivity, low R&D and low budgeting. However, some of the leaders are certainly moving towards industry 4.0 in biotechnological sector. They are using high level design for their biological reactors that can control fermentation to desired degrees. But there are still few companies that uses the traditional methods to perform fermentation. Many biological companies have started using nanotechnology for the research in biopharma to develop new drugs and vaccine. Today we can use nanotechnology to develop organs.
