Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.

1 This was Liz Marchand’s summer to spend time with her kids. She wanted to spend
as many days with them as she could on Navajo Lake in Colorado. Recently,
Marissa, her eldest daughter had been going through a period of rebellion and
gradually an uneasy truce had developed with her parents. Navajo Lake, 56
kilometres long and straddling the Colorado border seemed the perfect spot to do 5
some family bonding.
2 On a cloudy August morning, Liz set out with her four children, twins Mikaela
and Maria, eight years old, son Austin, six and Marissa, fifteen years old. Usually
the Marchands went to the lake with their close friends and families. However, this
time Liz was the only adult in the group. 10
3 Going for a change, Liz chose a campsite 15 kilometres by boat from
civilization and out of mobile-phone range. They arrived at 4 p.m. and set their big,
blue dome tent on a wide, flat sandy area in a little cove. Liz and the older girl set
heavy stones inside the tent to anchor it securely. Then, they went motor-boating
and knee-boarding before settling down for dinner. After dinner, it started to rain off 15
and on in little 15-minute bursts. However, Liz and the kids continued to roast
marshmallows over the fire until the downpour drove them inside.
4 They had no idea that away in the mountains, it was storming hard. Rain was
rushing through the washes, gathering force as gravity pulled it downhill until it
became debris-laden river where before had been none. Liz heard it coming – a 20
runaway train in the wilderness and knew what it was. She scrambled up, unzipped
the door and bolted out of the tent as the water hit.
5 “Marissa” she screamed as cold water rushed over them and the tent began to
turn on its base.
6 “Kids! Get out!” 25
7 The torrent pushed the tent with them towards the lake. Liz grabbed one of the
fibre-glass tent poles and held on. Marissa sprang through the door into the dark
confusion of the sudden blast of water. She grabbed a pole and braced her feet in the
silt to battle the current.
8 “Pull it to the left!” Liz shouted, spotting an area of higher ground a few metres 30
away.
9 Slathered in wet mud, they struggled but the stream was too much for them. It
dragged the tent, now completely flattened into chest-deep water of the lake. Inside,
the small ones screamed and clung to the mattresses floating in the chaotic blackness

of the tent’s interior. One by one, they got out and were ushered to dry land. All but 35
little Austin who had zipped himself into a sleeping bag.
10 In a panic, Liz and Marissa began plunging their arms into the tent, feeling for
Austin. They pulled out the sleeping bags, pillows, air mattresses but no Austin. Liz
dived into the claustrophobic tangled mass and searched. At last, she touched
something – the hair on his head. 40
11 “I found him” she blurted.
12 Then, she plunged back in handling the impossibly heavy, water-logged
sleeping bag with the motionless child inside. The girls helped her carry Austin to
the shore. Without hesitation, she began CPR. Austin’s little body was still. He was
cold with mud, lifeless. Then, she looked up and looked for the boat which she had 45
beached and tied it off to some rocks a few metres from the tent.
13 “Girls!” Liz barks, “you have to take over!”
14 Liz realised, that they had to get out of the place to get help. She considered
swimming for the boat and rejected the idea, certain she would drown in the flood if
she did. Then, a metre away she spotted an air mattress. She threw herself on it and 50
paddled out to the boat. The boat was covered in sludge, the engine clogged with
mud. Without much faith, she turned the key. The motor coughed, spluttered and
chugged to life. Carefully, she brought the boat around to the edge of the lake where
the children were sobbing in the dark. One by one, she lifted them aboard. Once
aboard they continued their gruelling task of reviving Austin; ten chest 55
compressions, one breath. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.
15 Earlier in the day, Liz had noticed a houseboat located directly across the lake, a
kilometre away. Now she gunned the engine in that direction. Away from the area
affected by the flood, the lake was eerily calm and glasslike.
16 Once alongside the houseboat, Liz and the kids began screaming for help. A 60
man and a woman stumbled out onto the deck.

32 Read the poem The Living Photograph and answer the questions that follow.

My small grandmother is tall there,

straight-back,white broderie anglaise shirt,
pleated skirt,flat shoes,grey bun,
a kind, old smile round her eyes.
Her big hand holds mine,
white hand in black hand.
Her sharp blue eyes look her own death in the eye.

It was true after all that look.

My tall grandmother became small.
Her back round and hunched.
Her soup forgot to boil.
She went to the awful place grandmothers go.
Somewhere unknown, unthinkable.

But there she is still,

in the photo with me at three,
the crinkled smile is still living ,breathing.
