DUE TO or BECAUSE

"Due to" and "because" are conjunctions. They connect phrases.

1. "Because" is followed by a clause with a subject and an action.

The economy is suffering because oil prices have gone so high.

2. "Due to" is followed by a noun (or noun clause) that is the cause of the given result.

The economic problem is due to high oil prices.

The economy is suffering due to high oil prices.

Due to the high oil prices, the economy is suffering.

3. We can replace "because" with "due to the fact that."

The economy is suffering due to the fact that oil prices have gone so high.

4. We can also replace "due to" with "caused by" or "because of."

The economic problem is caused by the high oil prices.

The economy is suffering because of the high oil prices.

Note: "Due to" is conventionally used for negative causes or situations.
