ABSTRACT

The Proposed Construction of Green Dormitory Building aims to be a help

primarily to the students of Laguna State Polytechnic University Main Campus. This

building will also serve as an innovative structure for it is planned to have a green wall

system in which climbing plants or cascading groundcovers are trained to cover

specially designed supporting structures and green roof system in which grass and

plants on the roof are to be placed.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Laguna State Polytechnic University or LSPU is the largest state university in

province of Laguna. It provides quality and affordable education to almost 30,000

students in its four regular campuses located in Santa Cruz, Sinoloan, San Pablo City

and Los Baños. Each campus provides different kinds of academic programs which

led other students to travel miles away from home to take the course they are

interested.

A dormitory building inside the campus help the students to save time in

travelling from home to the university, prevents them to spend too much money on

fare and get tired of having a two or three-hour trip. Inside campus dormitory also aim

the students and their parents to feel secured knowing it is located inside the campus.

A security guard and closed-circuit television or abbreviated as CCTV are provided to

hinder any disturbance or incident which can led the students to misfortune.

This building will also serve as an innovative structure for the entire campus for

it is planned to have “green system” that will distribute in the environment and

community to breathe with a fresh air. Climbing plants or cascading groundcovers in

the parts of the structures are to be placed. Affordable rooms are offered for people

with beneficial facilities that they can use to be productive in their own respective fields.

Background of the Study

This study is unlike any dormitory building you commonly see in the province

of Laguna. A Proposed Construction of Green Four-Storey Dormitory Building is

designed with an innovative idea and inspired by the project SkyGarden of Macro

Industrial Packaging Products Corporation (MIPPC). Project like SkyGarden is an

eco-friendly idea that helps our environment to improve the fresh air and prevent the

pollution that the future urbanization may bring.

A dormitory inside the campus is unlike a dormitory just located inside the

campus. Other parts of this dormitory building are places where the students of

College of Hotel Management and Tourism (CHMT) of this university can do a

hands-on training to improve their knowledge on their profession.

Now as part of the improvement of this university, researchers will be

confident to explore LSPU-SCC anytime since they will be aware that a place to stay

is not problem once they travel. They will also have a good feedback about this

university because providing a dormitory or hotel inside the campus is also another

way of expressing that people are welcome.

The Independent Variables or stimulus of this study are Location,

Construction Procedure, Man Power, Supplies and Materials, Tools and Equipment

and Working Plan.

The Dependent Variable or response of this study is the design and

construction of Green Four-Storey Dormitory Building.

Objectives of the Study

Specially is aimed to:

1. To create the right atmosphere for students to enable the student from

full-time study and research and collection.

2. To distribute an idea to the society that building infrastructures must

not only benefit for the owners but also to the environment.

3. To help students, players, visitors, and teachers or faculty members

stay overnight if there will be having a school activity overnight inside

the school area.

Significance of the Study

The study of the Proposed Construction of Green Dormitory Building located

at LSPU-SCC was conducted and designed to benefit the following.

Researchers

 Who will be needing information to this kind of feasibility and is

persuaded to make improvements and innovation.

School

 To meet variety needs of students and faculty regarding facility for

different events of the school involving overnight activities.

Students

 For the students to reduce their fatigue and concerning travel back

home and going back to school.

Scopes and Limitations

A Proposed Construction of Green Four-Storey Dormitory Building at LSPU-

SCC will be located in the present location of Office of Student Affairs and Services

(OSAS). This will be having a total lot area of 1,904 square meters. Each room with

the measurement of 34 square meter that can accommodate two persons and two

rooms will be united with a bathroom. This study will be having a 40 total number of

rooms and can accommodate approximately 80 people.

The materials will be used in proposing this construction are Expanded

Polystyrene (EPS) as the core material for all structural members – walls, roof, floor

– that is sprayed with a composite coating made up of a precise blend of sand,

cement, glass fiber and other additives that, together, create a building that meets or

exceeds all testing protocols and load requirements of the ICC Evaluation Service.
