Reflection Paper

Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon tackles a complex issue of national identity in

midst of colonial intrusion without making the film itself weighty in aura. Although shrouded in

light humor, the film was able to point out the disorientation of the country and its citizens due to

the inferiority subjected to them. The Philippines during the 19th century was depicted in a state of

confusion with different foreigners teeming the land. Because of this, diverse cultures and varied

customs seemed to be clashing together as the country was trying to gain a stable position. The

movie portrayed, as well, the lives and common situation of the Filipinos under their colonizers’

alien government.

The film’s representation of the 19th century was accurate in terms of showing a state of

armed conflict between the Spaniards, American, and Filipinos. Adding to that is the portrayal of

the Filipinos already adapting to the rapid change brought by colonialization when it comes to

their thinking, trade, fashion, entertainment, and the like. Even though the film could have done

better in its technicalities, it is of course understandable and already commendable considering the

time of its production. Overall, I think that the movie has been able to stand up to its idea.

“In what grounds would someone be regarded as a Filipino?” is the main question the film

seeks to answer throughout. Watching it, I was able to reflect on its relevance nowadays. With our

national independence, was our identity clearer today? Or was it even harder for us to construct a

concrete one? As a Filipino myself, I was compelled to think of ways on how would I be able to

uphold the identity those long periods of time and many generations have already waved.
