Ranking Criteria of the World Universities

1. QS World Rankings
Institutional rankings within the QS World University Rankings are based
on six indicators that take into consideration academic and research
performance as well as international outlook.

Ranking breakdown:

 40% - Academic reputation


 20% - Student-to-faculty ratio
 20% - Citations per faculty
 10% - Employer reputation
 5% - International faculty ratio
 5% - International student ratio

2. Time Higher Education (THE)


The Times Higher Education publishes the World University Rankings
including the 1,102 top universities in the world, making it their biggest
international league table to date. They evaluated universities across
teaching, research, international outlook, reputation and more.

Ranking breakdown:

 30% - Teaching (the learning environment)


 30% - Research (volume, income and reputation)
 30% - Citations (research influence)
 7.5% - International outlook (staff, students and research)
 2.5% - Industry income (knowledge transfer)

3. U.S. News and World Report
More than 1.250 universities from 60 countries have been ranked based
on 13 indicators that measure their academic research performance and
their global and regional reputations.

Ranking breakdown:
 12.5% - Global research reputation
 12.5% - Regional research reputation
 12.5% - Number of publications that are among the 10 percent
most cited
 10% - Publications
 10% - Percentage of total publications that are among the 10
percent most cited
 10% - Normalized citation impact
 7.5% - Total citations
 5% - International collaboration
 5% - Percentage of total publications with international
collaboration
 5% - Number of highly cited papers that are among the top 1
percent most cited in their respective field
 5% - Percentage of total publications that are among the top 1
percent most highly cited papers
 2.5% - Books
 2.5% - Conferences

4. Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)
ARWU uses six objective indicators (in four categories) to rank world
universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel
Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by
Clarivate Analytics, number of articles published in journals of Nature
and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index -
Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance
of a university. More than 1200 universities are ranked by ARWU every
year and the best 500 are published.

 10% - Quality of Education


 40% - Quality of Faculty
• Staff of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals -
20%
• Highly cited researchers in 21 broad subject categories - 20%
 40% - Research Output
• Papers published in Nature and Science - 20%
• Papers indexed in Science Citation Index-expanded - 20%
 10% - Per Capita Performance

5. Center for World University Rankings (CWUR)


The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) university ranking
measures the quality of education and training of students as well as the
prestige of the faculty members and the quality of their research without
relying on surveys and university data submissions. CWUR uses eight
objective and robust indicators to rank the world's top 1000 universities.

 15% - Quality of Education


 15% - Alumni Employment
 15% - Quality of Faculty
 15% - Research Output (previously publications)
 15% - Quality Publications
 15% - Influence
 10% - Citations

In years prior to 2018, the weights were slightly different following two
indicators were also used:

 5% - Broad Impact, measured by the university's h-index


 5% - Patents, measured by the number of international patent
filings
