There are two main types of lathes - metal lathes and wood lathes. A lathe consists of a head stock, tool rest, tail stock, motor, and face plate. Safety rules for using a lathe include always starting at a low speed, removing square corners, having no spectators except for tutoring or instruction, moving the tool rest closer as the workpiece decreases in diameter, removing the tool rest for sanding, never touching the workpiece while it is moving, holding tools firmly with both hands, avoiding loose clothing or jewelry, keeping tools sharp, using the right tool for the job, spinning the workpiece by hand before turning on the lathe to ensure clearance from the tool rest, and ensuring secure

Two types ● Metal lathe ● Wood lathe components ● Head stock ● Tool rest ● Tail stock ● Motor ● Face plate rules ● Always rough out the stock at low speed. Remove square corners ● No spectators. Exceptions: Tutoring, or instructors giving instructions ● As the wood’s diameter decreases, move the tool rest closer to the work ● Always remove the tool rest when sanding ● Never touch the work with your bare hands when it is in motion ● Hold tools firmly in both hands ● Never wear loose clothing, jewelry, and/or long hair when turning ● Always keep the tools shar. When they become dull ask the instructor to sharpen them ● Use the right tool for the right job ● Before turning on the machine, always spin the work by hand to make sure it clears the tool rest. ● Before turning on the lathe, make sure spindle turnings are secure between centers
