Advisory Note
Many bigger installations in refineries and terminals require a mixture of instrumentation, due to the differ-
ent tanks and properties of the products measured.
This advisory note will discuss how to integrate radar and servo into one installation and what differences
should be noted.
1. CABLING CONCEPTS FOR RADAR AND SERVO
- The Proservo connects directly into the control room via industry standard or proprietary protocols.
Up to 4 instruments (including the Promonitor NRF 560 and Prothermo NMT 53x) and spot
temperature on the tank are connected via Ex I multi-drop HART to the Proservo (beginning
with software version 4.24).
- The Micropilot S and M are connected via i.s. HART to the Tank Side Monitor NRF590, providing
communication to the control room. Up to six HART devices can be connected to the NRF 590 via
an intrinsically safe two wire connection, including the Prothermo NMT 535/539 for average tem-
perature measurement and Cerabar/Deltabar for pressure. The NRF 590 provides communication
via industry standard and proprietary digital gauging communication protocols.

1.4. COMPATIBLE FIELDBUS PROTOCOLS FROM THE CONTROL ROOM TO THE TANK
The following options offer compatibility of the Proservo and the Tank Side Monitor on one loop:
Proservo NMS Tank Side Monitor NRF590
Primary (Digital) output Field communication protocol
A 1
Output-1: Serial pulse (Sakura V1/MDP) WM550, non-IS 4...20mA output,
L
Output-1: Whessoematic 550, with Whessoe protocol with dual communication
8
V1, non-IS 4...20mA output, non-IS 4...20mA
HART output, relay output,
To provide a tank base display for the Proservo, an optional Promonitor NRF 560 can be connected via
HART. The Promonitor displays level and average temperature data, measured by the Proservo and supports
Proservo operational commands.

Whessoematic WM550
VAREC Mark/Space

Advisory Note
Example: One pressure transmitter connected to the Proservo or Tank Side Monitor
- can be viewed on the Proservo (but not on a Promonitor) or Tank Side Monitor
- can be transmitted into the control room via V1 protocol to a NRM tank computer and sent to a
host via MODBUS (documented as gas pressure)
- can be transmitted into the control room from the Proservo via Rackbus or V1 to an RTU/8130,
but must be configured as an additional point in ViewRTU
3. FUNCTIONAL DIFFERENCES
3.1. CONFIGURATION
The Proservo and both the Micropilot and Tank Side Monitor offer instrument configuration via a built in
display. The Micropilot and Tank Side Monitor also support a Local Diagnostic Interface (LDI) to allow
connection of the Tof Tool for remote configuration.
Both the Tank Side Monitor and Proservo integrate pressure transmitters (see [7]):
- The Proservo allows the connection of two i.s. pressure transmitters as a standard feature. The
values can be displayed and transmitted via V1l, EIA-485 Rackbus or Whessoematic protocol.
- The NRF 590 allows the integration of 3 additional pressure transmitters (note the maximum
power supply provided by the NRF590).
Depending on the master, configuration of the process variables may be necessary in both instruments.
The Proservo does not include hybrid calculations, but supports spot and density profiling with average
density calculation via operator commands or remote commands as an optional feature.
Hybrid calculation has up to now been done by a TSP on the RTU/8130, but will be available in FuelsMan-
ager in 2004.
Advisory Note
The availability of a non-i.s. 4..20mA output on the NRF 590 depends on the communication protocol
selected, see [3].
The Proservo NMS has an output option with two non-i.s. assignable 4..20mA channels (assignable to
product level, interface level, bottom or temperature): Bottom is not assignable with 4...20mA out
Proservo NMS
Secondary output
2
Output-2: 4-20mA, 2 chan. free assign
In version 2.0, a 4..20 i.s. input will be a standard feature. In version 1.4, the NRF590 has an i.s. 4..20 mA
input as an order option:
A 4..20 mA input is not available on the Proservo (only digital HART signal is available).
Version 2.0 will include two i.s. digital inputs on the i.s. main board.
The Proservo NMS has order options to include a digital input module.

4. APPROVALS
Both the Proservo and the Micropilot S are Weights and Measures (W&M) custody transfer approved by
NMi and PTB.
- The Proservo includes a copy of the W&M type approval, no W&M specific factory tests are per-
formed.
- Each Micropilot S is tested on the PTB/NMi approved test rig in Maulburg. A report with test re-
sults is included and shipped with each unit. In case of “initial verification”, the test result is
stamped by NMi or PTB and the instrument is sealed (at an extra charge).
For approvals in other countries, please contact the product managers.
5. REFERENCES
Contact your sales center for the latest reference/user list and please provide information on your applica-
tions!
Advisory Note
- Shell BonnyTerminal in Nigeria: 44 Proservo gauges with Density profile and Micropilot S for
redundant purpose.
Over one thousand Micropilot S radars have been installed in tank gauging applications up to the end of
2003.
Q: Can I change digital input/outputs in the Tank Side Monitor NRF 590?
A: Yes, the modules can be exchanged with standard modules.
Please note that the product order code changes and does not match the actual installation,
and certifications are invalid.
