Ideal "Discotheque"

of more than
1,700 orchestral works of feelings
(May 2009; frequently updated)

An anthology of "classical" works which are characterized by their

artistic qualities: expression of feelings, coherence, concision,
density. This "discotheque" is intended for everybody, from
beginner to music lover.

To Walter Simmons,
a great American music critic,
who agreed to be the dedicatee.

• The works preceded by a +
According to (almost) all music lovers, these compositions are masterworks. It is
recommended to begin by listening to them.

• The works preceded by an asterisk *

To go beyond the previous selection – of course, this selection is more subjective.

• « PIANO CONCERTOS » and « OTHER WORKS FOR PIANO AND ORCHESTRA »

Works for piano and orchestra entitled "concerto", which are 12 to 16 minutes long,
are listed among the PIANO CONCERTOS if their style is sufficiently classical, that is
serious.

• Why are some works not listed in their entirety?

For some works, this Discotheque includes only one movement, particularly
remarkable. Often, these movements are known independently.

• Why « 1, 700 works »?

This number is not final. As I discover other masterworks from around the world, I
will include them. The Internet is a great resource for discovering little-known
masterpieces.

• Levels of listening difficulty

The « Ideal "Discotheque" » distinguishes five (5) levels of difficulty. Nonetheless even
the most difficult works are written in a broadly-defined "romantic" spirit.

• How to read the indications

The nationality of each composer is indicated, along with the date of composition or
publication of each work, the level of listening difficulty and its average duration.
For example: Holst Gustav (UK): +The Planets, symphonic suite (1917/III/50’)
means:

2
Surname, First name (Nationality)
+ = is a masterwork
Title, subtitle
1917 = date of the composition (or, failing that, the publication)
III = Moderately difficult listening
50’ = average duration: 50 minutes
