Students' guide: ECG interpretation

A complete interpretation of an ECG must have the following:

- the rhythm: ie sinus, atrial fibrillation etc
- the rate
-the axis
-any abnormalities eg:
- first degree heart block
- right /left bundle branch block
- prolonged QT
- inferior/septal/anterior (or other combination) myocardial infarction AND type
(ST elevation or depression MI)

NB: a description of an ECG calls for all measurements to be documented (those above as well
as intervals, QRS width etc)

The interpretation of the ECG above is given:

This is sinus rhythm with a rate of 60 beats per minute, with normal axis and features in
keeping with an ST elevation inferior wall myocardial infarction
