represents cost ($), construct a table of values
for 0–3 hours for the cost of playing ten‐pin
bowling at the new alley.
b) Use your table of values to plot a graph of
time versus cost. (Hint: Ensure your time
axis (horizontal axis) extends to 6 hours and
your cost axis (vertical axis) extends to $40.)
c) What is the y‐intercept? What does the y‐intercept represent in terms of the cost?
d) Calculate the gradient.
e) Write a linear equation to describe the relationship between cost and time.
f) Use your linear equation from part e to calculate the cost of a 5-hour tournament.
g) Use your graph to check your answer to part f.

c) y-intercept is the amount that needs to be payed even when the game has not started and
in this case the y-intercept in $2
14−8 6
d) Gradient = 2−1 = 1 = 6
e) Equation = y – y1 = Gradient (x-x1)
Let y1 be 14
Let x1 be 2
y – 14 = 6(x – 2)
y – 14 = 6x – 12
y – 14 + 12 = 6x
y – 2 = 6x
y – 2 – 6x = 0 <- Answer

f) let x be 5
y – 6x – 2 = 0
y–6x5–2=0
y – 32 = 0
y = $32

2. Show that the quadrilateral ABCD is a parallelogram.

Ways to prove that this shape is a parallelogram –

1) Parallel sides have same length
2) Diagonals Bisect each other
Distance from point B to C = √(8 − 6)2 + (7 − 3)2
= √(2)2 + (4)2
=√4 + 16 = √20
Distance from point B to A = √(3 − 1)2 + (6 − 2)2
= √20

Distance from point A to D = √(4 − 2)2 + (5 − 1)2

=√(2)2 + (4)2

DPSI/MYP4/Mathematics
= √4 + 16 = √20

Distance from D to C = √(8 − 4)2 + (7 − 5)2

=√(4)2 + (2)2
= √4 + 16 = √20

∴ Sides BC and AD have same length and Sides DC and BA have same lengths so we can call this is
paralellogram, but there is one more step left to prove that this is a Parallelogram which is to find the midpoint
of all points and if the midpoint is same, then this is a parallelogram.
7+1 8+2
Coordinate of Midpoint of Points A and C = 2
, 2 = (4,5)
3+5 4+6
Coordinate of Midpoints of Points B and D = 2 , 2 = (4,5)

∴ Sides BC and AD have same length and Sides DC and BA have same lengths and same midpoints we can call this
a parallelogram

3. Triangle ABC is an isosceles triangle where AB = AC, B is the point (−1, 2), C is the point (6, 3)
and A is the point (a, 3a). Find the value of the integer constant a.
√(2 − 3𝑎)2 + (−1 − 𝑎)2 = √(3 − 3𝑎)2 + (6 − 𝑎)2
= 4 + 9𝑎2 − 12𝑎 + 1 + 𝑎2 + 2𝑎 = 9 − 18𝑎 + 36 + 𝑎2 − 12𝑎
= 4 + 1 + 2𝑎 = 9 − 18𝑎 + 36
= 20𝑎 = 9 + 36 − 5
= 20𝑎 = 40
=𝑎=2

4. ABCD is a parallelogram.
a) Find the gradients of AB and BC.
b) Find the coordinates of the point D (x, y).
c) Show that the diagonals AC and BD bisect each other.

5. The map shows the proposed course for a yacht race. Buoys
have been positioned at A (1, 5), B (8, 8), C (12, 6), and D
(10, w).
a) How far is it from the start, O, to buoy A?
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 0 𝑡𝑜 𝐴 = √(5 − 0)2 + (1 − 0)2
=√25 + 1 = √26
b) The race marshall boat, M, is situated halfway between
buoys A and C. What are the coordinates of the boat’s
position?
1+12 6+5
𝑃𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝑀 = 2 , 2 = (6.5, 5.5)

c) Stage 4 of the race (from C to D) is perpendicular to stage 3 (from B to C). What is the gradient
of CD?
1.5 − 6
𝐺𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝐶𝐷 = = 2.25
10 − 12

d) Find the linear equation that describes stage 4.

Equation = y – y1 = Gradient (x-x1)
𝑦 − 6 = 2.25(𝑥 − 12)
= 𝑦 − 6 = 2.25𝑥 − 27
= 𝑦 − 2.25𝑥 + 21 = 0

e) Hence determine the exact position of buoy D.

straight lines). If the house is situated at (2, 4), bank at (5, 8), school at (13, 14) and office at
(13, 26) and coordinates are in km.
