The Effect of using Full English Language in the EYL Classroom

Young learners have their own features which need to be understood by those who wish to be
successful teachers of young learners. For instance, Brumfit (1991) described young learners as
anxious, enthusiastic and motivated learners, who can be easily stimulated. In teaching young
learners, teacher must easy to use language for make student easily to understand what the
teachers say. Another striking feature of young learners is that they have a greater facility than
adult learners for understanding and imitating what they hear (Brewster & Ellis, 2001, p.3).
Specifically, teacher used full English can bring two effects for young learners in the classroom.

Firstly, the young learners have a little vocabulary. Unlike Piaget who argued that “language
plays a role in the development of children’s thinking and understanding but it is not the driving
force” (Brumfit, 1991, p.264). Therefore, the students not understand what the teachers say with
full English language because young learners have a little vocabulary. In another word, the
students will be a many questions to the teacher As a consequence; the young learners can’t good
remember the material after learner in the school. Given those points, the teacher used full
English language in the classroom has effect for young learner not understand absolutely because
they have little vocabulary.

Secondly, the young learners not pay attention to the teacher. The young learner’s attention will
be focus or looking to another place/ something they like. Other characteristics listed by Scott &
Ytreberg (2001) include that five to seven years olds understand situations more quickly than
they understand the language used, have a very short attention and concentration span, and
sometimes they have difficulties in knowing what fact is and what fiction is (p.1). Further, the
students will focus if something they like more interesting. The young learner have character fast
to bored. They will be bored if the teacher use full English, because that, the teacher not attention
to the student. As shown above, the effect for young learners are not paying attention to the
teacher used full English Language in the classroom.

The two above mentioned effect the teacher used full English Language in the classroom have
effect for young learners not understand absolutely what teacher say because young leaners have
little vocabulary and the young learner not pay attention to the teacher, they will be looking
something they like, they have characteristic fast to bored. In the light of the aforementioned
effect, it is not good to the teacher used full English language to teach young learner in the
classroom.
