This quasi-experimental research aims to observe the effect of collaborative writing on


students’ writing skill at SMA Negeri 3 Padang Panjang. This research was carried out
in SMA Negeri 3 Padang Panjang from March to April 2019. The population was 80
students of eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Padang Panjang academic year
2018/2019. The samples, which were selected by using cluster random sampling, were
categorized as the experimental and control class. The experimental class was taught by
using collaborative writing and the control group was taught by using conventional
teaching strategy. The data were collected through a post-test in order to obtain
students’ writing skill on different components of writing such as content,
organization, vocabulary, language use/grammar, and mechanics. The findings of this
study shows that (1) collaborative writing strategy resulted better writing skill than
conventional teaching strategy for eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Padang
Panjang, (2) collaborative writing strategy resulted better writing skill with high writing
motivation than conventional teaching strategy, (3) collaborative writing strategy
resulted better writing skill with low writing motivation than conventional teaching
strategy, (4) there was no interaction between teaching strategies and students’ writing
motivation on students’ writing skill in writing hortatory text. The results of this
study also shed light on the effect of collaborative writing and students’ writing
skill which bears some implication for teachers.
