 Student led
 Started in 2016- inequality in Philly public school system; wanted to give students
a voice
 Student voice, school to prison pipeline, teacher diversity, building conditions
 Vision: want to see students raise their voices~ students are reformers and
disruptors of the failing system; a fight for equity- when they are given what they
need rather than the same thing for everyone
 Team members, board members, donors are involved
 Advocacy- school presentations, news report, the voice (blog)
 Community outreach- helped disband the School Reform Commission; trained
police officers on how to relate to students, advocated to stop adding metal
detectors, advocacy based clothing line, gave a student perspective discussion at an
education conference.
 Funding- Bread and Roses- to focus on branding and development
 iTag- a series of community events that the advocates are trained in and go into
schools and talk about- "inquiry to action group"

 Spark intellectual inquiry and exchange connecting new concepts to timeless
values
 Nonpartisan- unbiased, don’t side with either party
 1949- 20 day celebration of Goethe~ got a lot of press and then the institute was
created…WWII was happening, causing Walter Paepcke to want to go to Colorado
 Community outreach: Policy programs, leadership initiatives, conferences and
events, youth and engagement programs, seminars, international partnerships,
media resources
 Funding: donors; The Aspen Institute Society of Fellows
 Convene diverse thinkers and doers to find paths to solving critical problems;
lower barriers to learning, work, and health
 Working to alleviate diploma disparity- only 11% of the poorest students go to
college; increasing that through charter schools, college advisors, college
admissions enrolling 1st generation and transfer students~ "pipeline modeling"-
from community colleges to 4 yr college. "Articulation agreements"- guarantee that
credits will all transfer in the process
 Leadership ventures- allow leaders a chance to reflect on their values and channel
creativity
 Partners with the NexGen Network- AI- artificial intelligence
