Alcohol in the blood

The analysis of alcohol in the blood (alcohol) measures the amount of alcohol
(ethanol) in your body. Alcohol is rapidly absorbed into the blood and can be
measured within minutes of drinking an alcoholic beverage. The amount of alcohol
in the blood reaches its highest level approximately one hour after drinking. But the
food in the stomach can increase the amount of time it takes for the alcohol in the
blood to reach its highest level. About 90% of the alcohol is broken down in the liver.
The rest is removed from the body in the urine and exhaled breath.

Alcohol has an obvious effect on the body, even when consumed in small quantities.
In large quantities, alcohol acts as a sedative and depresses the central nervous
system.

The blood alcohol test is often used to determine if you are drunk as defined by law.
If this test is done for legal reasons, a consent form may be necessary; however,
refusing to take the test may have legal consequences.
