13 Standardization Lab
13 Standardization Lab
Objective: The objective of this lab is to make a standard solution of about 0.1 molar KHP.
Material: Balances, weightboats, 500 mL volumetric flasks, large flask, Solid NaOH or KOH,
Solid Potassium hydrogen phthalate(KHP), Storage bottles, & 50 mL beakers
Procedure: Making a Standard KHP solution:
1. Determine the mass of KHP required to make 500 mL of about a 0.1 M KHP (multiply the molarity of
KHP times the molecular mass of KHP (204.23 g/mole) times the volume).
2. Mass approximately 5 % more of the solid KHP than the amount determined in step 1 in a wellmarked 50
or 100 mL beaker. This amount does not need to be accurate.
3. Clean and rinse a volumetric flask very well.
4. Place your solid in its container in the drying oven and dry overnight. (This part may be done already)
5. Remove the solid KHP in its beaker from the drying oven and allow it to cool & mass it.
6. Pour the contents of the weight boat into the 500 mL volumetric flask.
7. Accurately remass the beaker to determine the exact amount of KHP added.
8. Fill the volumetric flask about 1/2 full with distilled water making sure to wash any solid down the neck
of the flask.
9. Swirl the flask holding the bottom at all times, until all the solid KHP is dissolved.
10. Carefully fill the flask to the line. The bottom of the meniscus should be level with the line.
11. Swirl the flask by the bottom, and pour the contents of the volumetric flask into a
well marked storage bottle.
Making the NaOH solution: Perform this while the KHP is drying
1.Determine the volume of the container to be used. (1 to 4 L)
2.Determine the mass of solid NaOH required to make about a 0.1 M
3.NaOH solution equal to the volume determined.
4.Mass the container.
5.Add about 1.1 times the mass of solid NaOH determined to the container.
6.Fill the container about 1/2 full with distilled water.
7.Swirl until all the solid NaOH has been dissolved.
8.Fill the container to your planned level with distilled water and swirl a little.
9.Place a cap on the container, mark it well, and allow it to sit for several days.
Results: Construct a chart displaying all the information. Calculate the exact
concentration of the KHP.
Conclusion: Describe the lab. Indicate all possible error that could have occurred in the lab. Indicate any
problems with the lab. Determine how you could correct for these errors or problems.
