1. Inclinometer in Soil
1.1 Installation-Inclinometer Access Tube
1.2 Instructions from the Engineer will be received for the total installation depth
(including minimum depth of penetration into the founding stratum), compression
joint dimensions, and orientation of access tube keyways.
1.3 Drilling will be undertaken by rotary wash boring. A borehole of nominal 100m
diameter will be formed through overburden to a stiff founding stratum for
socketing. The borehole will be cased to the depth where the strata are sufficiently
competent for the hole to stay open.
1.4 On or just before completion of the borehole, the total installation depth and
embedded depth will be confirmed by the engineer. The access tube, 70mm
diameter ABS 4 keyways tubes will then be laid out and marked up ready for
installation.
1.5 The end cap will pushed onto the base length of access tube, drilled through,
riveted into position with at least four rivets and wrapped with sealing tape, working
the tape well onto the tube to ensure a good seal.
1.6 The borehole will then be checked for depth with a weighted tape and provided
that the check is satisfactory, pre-grouting of the borehole will be proceed.
1.7 The borehole will be filled with grout mixed in the proportion of as per specified
in specifications. The grout will be poured via a tremie pipe inserted to the base of
the borehole.
1.8 The access tube will then be lowered into the pre-grouted borehole length by
length, making up compression joints using mastic, two rivets and sealing tape.
1.9 As each length of access tube is lowered, water will be poured into the access
tube to counteract the buoyancy of the grout.
1.10 When the last length of access tube is installed, the orientation of the access
tube keyways will be adjusted to the specified direction as agreed by the SC.

1.11 The casing will then be withdrawn from the borehole

1.12 On completion of the installation the inclinometer probe will be lowered as
a dummy to check that the access tube is clear over the full depth.
1.13 The top cap will then be taped onto the access tube using plastic sealing
tape to prevent any ingress of foreign material.
1.14 Finally a check will be made to ensure that the borehole is still full of grout,
topping up if required. Thus, complete the installation.
1.15 Installation record and engineering borehole log will be complete for each
installation and copied to the SC.
