Gantt chart

A Gantt chart is a type of bar chart that illustrates a project schedule, named
after its inventor, Henry Gantt (1861–1919), who designed such a chart
around the years 1910–1915.[1][2] Modern Gantt charts also show
the dependency relationships between activities and current schedule status.

A Gantt chart is a horizontal bar chart developed as a production control tool


in 1917 by Henry L. Gantt, an American engineer and social scientist.
Frequently used in project management, a Gantt chart provides a graphical
illustration of a schedule that helps to plan, coordinate, and track specific
tasks in a project.
To create a Gantt chart, execute the following steps.
1. Select the range A3:C11.

2. On the Insert tab, in the Charts group, click the Column symbol.

3. Click Stacked Bar.

4. Enter a title by clicking on Chart Title. For example, Build a House.

5. Click the legend at the bottom and press Delete.

6. The tasks (Foundation, Walls, etc.) are in reverse order. Right click the tasks
on the chart, click Format Axis and check 'Categories in reverse order'.

7. Right click the blue bars, click Format Data


8. Dates and times are stored as numbers in Excel and count the number of
days since January 0, 1900. 1-jun-2017 (start) is the same as 42887. 15-jul-
2017 (end) is the same as 42931. Right click the dates on the chart, click
Format Axis and fix the minimum bound to 42887, maximum bound to 42931
and Major unit to 7.

Activity Crashing

* Crashing is a schedule compression technique used to reduce or shorten the


project schedule. After applying the crashing, the critical path might have
changed and result in creating a different critical path. Always revisit the
project schedule to ensure the schedule has been crashed.

* Crashing is another schedule compression technique where you add extra


resources to the project to compress the schedule. In crashing, you review the
critical path and see which activities can be completed by adding extra
resources. You try to find the activities that can be reduced the most by adding
the least amount of cost. Once you find those activities, you will apply the
crashing technique.

2. Build Slack Time Into the Schedule.

3. Crash When Necessary.

4. Don't Be Afraid to Fast-Track Tasks.
