bow Bridge, that starts at a field
where beloved pets await the inevi-
table arrival of their humans, so they
can travel on together to the Great

But maybe it isn’t like that for ev-
eryone. Maybe, for some of us, that
journey toward the Rainbow Bridge
takes us down a small rural by-way,
across a one-way bridge, and as we
pass the last canopy of trees, we see
banners rippling in the winds above

fight. After all, that’s why we’re here – to let the kids have
their day. And what a day it has been!

Known World Ladies of
The Rose Tournament
Eleven kingdoms gathered on the Western Battlefield
to honor the Ladies of the Rose by representing them in
honorable combat. Fifty-nine fencers, each representing
a single Rose took the field to participate in a Bedford-
style tournament. The fencers were paired up by the
mistresses of the list and fought their opponents in three
passes before continuing to the next round of fighting.
Before the final round of fighting, Their Majesties of
the East called upon Morikatsu to kneel before them.
They solemnly asked their fighter if he would accept
the mantle of Knight for the East Kingdom, which he
respectfully agreed to do. The ceremony to officially
grant knighthood to Morikatsu will take place before
the Armored Bridge Battle.
The champion of the tournament was declared to be
Duke Edward Grey of the East representing Countess
Violante of the East Kingdom. Duke Edward earned a
total of 58 points over the course of this seven round
tourney. He was awarded a $50 gift certificate to Clay-
baby. When asked about his impression of the tourney
Duke Edward replied, “There were excellent fights out
on the field today.”
Atli Irison of Sjarulf from the Middle Kingdom, with
a total of 144 points. Another fencer was awarded for
the best theatrical death. Lady Albreda Ismeria of the
Middle gleefully re-enacted her death for all gathered
before claiming her prize.
Atlantean 5-Person Melee Tourney
Atlantia held a five-person, melee-style tourney that
fielded 13 teams with well picked names right after the
Novice tourney. All teams would fight in two pools
of round robin, and the top two teams from each pool
would advance to the final round. The top four teams
were: And Five is Right Out, Rainbow Dragon Kitties,
Does It Fit? and Condotteiri Splash. Condottieri Splash
from Atlantia and And Five is Right Out emerged as
the top two and faced off for the title. And Five is Right
Out, consisting of Lord Jordan Vandal, Master Hawk
Rill Honeybuns, (both of the Outlands), Don Isaac Von
Basel, Lady Leandra Forte, (of Ansteora) and Master
John Drake (of An Tir), claimed the title of tourney
champions.

Master Todesco held the second Cut and Thrust tour-
ney of this war focusing specifically on late period style Linen Tunics, Kilts, Entari
fighting. Twelve combatants entered the lists and fought & Chitons under $50!

each battle. The fencer with the most points would be
declared the winner. The final battle was between Robert Hand Made Beaded Snoods.

Æthelmarc Novice Tourney
Master Poe of Æthelmarc held the annual novice tour-

to see their own potential, and then act on it. He was on the
Pennsic Champions Archery team for many years, served as
Deputy Earl Marshal for Archery in Atlantia, and was the
Pennsic Independent’s Archery Reporter for 15 years.
Master Neko Me was a large part of the Midrealm archery
community for well over 25 years. He started in the SCA in
1989 and was involved in archery from the very beginning. He
never missed a year on the Pennsic War Archery Champions
team, and he served as Archer General of the Midrealm for Photo by Sean Sreamach
several years. When the Midrealm separated their Archer Master Stephen Grimm of Atlantia firing off CoG’s last arrow

was one of the principle inductees into the Order of the Green-
wood Company and held the archery rank of Dragon Archer

peerage as a Pelican for his service to the archery community.
Neko Me actively participated in the Society’s Inter King-
dom Archery Competitions (IKAC). He enjoyed shooting a
variety of bow types, including occasionally shooting with
a crossbow. He had a zeal and passion for teaching and was
a kind and generous man. He always found a way to help
others, and never missed a chance to do so. He knew no
strangers, was easy to talk to, and knew just how to handle
most any situation with ease and grace.
Rask Ulfbjorn was granted his AoA in 1988 and was prob-
ably best known at Pennsic as the merchant who owned

There is a final Toddler’s Playgroup in the Family Lounge
this morning from 9:30-11 am, and the Northshield Day ac-
tivities in Family Point Tent #1 run from 9 until noon today.
After noon, there will be no more Family Activities for this
year’s War.
Youth U classes are continuing in FP Tent #2 today: 11 am
White Vine Illuminated Border, and 12 pm Bring Out Your
Dead: Bubonic Plague Simulation (90 min.). Because the
“plague” class runs past 1 pm, Ori/Kirigami: Art of Paper
Folding and Cutting is actually in FP Tent #1 at 1 pm. Then it’s
back to the usual FP Tent #2 at 3 pm for Make a Cup Cover for
‘Tweens, followed by Bling Out Your Veils for 2 hours, starting
a 4 pm (all supplies provided; fee $5; limit 10).
There are still Teen U classes in AS 6 today as well: 11 am
Viking Whipcord: Don’t Plunder Without It; 12 pm Kumihimo
for Teens: Learn and Do; 1 pm Silk Painting for Teens (2-hour
class; material fee $10, limit 10); 3 pm Beginning Bard Craft
for Teens; and 4 pm Youth Vocal Heraldry: How to Be Heard
& Understood.
Elsewhere today, you could learn about Medieval Calendars
(11 am, AS 15), why they look so different from the calendars
we use today, and why William Shakespeare called the day
Julius Caesar was assassinated the Ides of March. Out at the
Archery Family Range from noon to 3 pm, you can be part of
Family Archery and Friendly Competitions. Tonight at 7 pm
is the final Bedtime Stories for Children in AS 13.
If someone you know has been attending chorus practices
all week long, tonight is the big Known World Choirs Perfor-
mance, starting at 6:30 pm in the Performing Arts Tent. In past
years, it has been the custom for the Children’s Choir and the
Youth Choir to perform before the adult choirs, so if you want
to see your friends, be there from the start.
Keep your fingers crossed for sunshine and no rain at Pennsic
for the next couple of days so that everyone can pack away
a dry tent instead of a wet or damp one before they have to
head back home.
The Terpsichorean Treasure
Getting the Word from the Dancer on the Street!
Hello dance community! We’re rolling right along with lots
of classes and balls. Today I chatted with David of Hartshorn-
dale, from the East Kingdom. He came to the dance tent for
Duchess Diana’s fifteenth-century Italian dance class, which
was in fact taught by a substitute, Master James Blackcloak.
Due to an injury, Duchess Diana was unable to make it.
“I’m a regular at the dance tent,” David said. “Diana and I
are both from Hartshorndale, and we are privileged to have
a weekly dance practice through her. It’s something my wife
and I enjoy.”
James walked the class through several dances in antici-
pation of that night’s Feast of the Phoenix Ball hosted by
Mistress Judith. “I didn’t learn any new steps today, but I
did learn a new dance,” said David. “It was a good class.
James is a very good teacher, and he got someone through
the class who had never done fifteenth century Italian before.
That was very positive.”
David also enjoyed having a live musician for the tail end
of the class. “It was very nice,” he said. “She was able to play
at a slower tempo for the practice, which was very good.”
Elizabeth of Dendermonde, from the West, had already
committed to playing for the class immediately after Di-
ana’s/James’s, and showed up early. She lent her violin to
the last dance James was teaching, much to the delight of
everyone there. Elizabeth’s playing was met with applause
when the dance was done.
Elizabeth pushed for years to make sure there was live
music at all of the Pennsic balls, and now that that has become
standard practice, she is pushing to get live musicians into
classes. I’m adding my own push to that as well.
Musicians: if you enjoy playing dance music and have
time to spare during the day, please stop by and see if you
can play for a class or two. All instruments and skill levels
are welcome, just check with the teacher first.

 Building Your Persona
from the Inside Out

Practice Makes Perfect
The time has come to share what you have built with oth-
ers. Just as the fighters, artisans and archers have to practice
in order to gain skill, so do you have to practice to really
make your persona come to life. There is no better way to
practice than with friends.
Years ago, I belonged to another small medievalist group
and we held fighter practice every Sunday. One week, some-
one who was there accompanying a fighter said, “we practice
fighting, why don’t we practice feasting?” Thus, was born
the custom of monthly “Feast Practices.”
A feast practice takes little more preparation than any other
kind of party. What we would do is have the feast cooks pre-
paring dinner while fighter practice took place. Afterward,
the fighters would clean up and join the non-fighters at table.
We didn’t need a hall or any extensive preparations—any
room big enough for a table to seat the diners will do. In
some cases, we set up folding tables in a living room where
fabric hid the modern entertainment center, lighting came
from lamps and candles, and a feast of period dishes was
laid out. (Cooks need to practice too!)
When everyone was ready, the host would announce “the
Blue Flag has been raised.” This was the signal that everyone
was to be in persona. We never got around to making a physi-
cal flag, but the term stuck, and it became our short-hand
for any situation where we were to wear garb and keep to
appropriate topics of conversation. When the feast was over,
the host would announce “the Blue Flag is down” and ev-
eryone would help set the room to rights and do the dishes.
The key to the success of these practices was that there was
a set period, not too long, when the Blue Flag was up. Being in
persona all day can seem daunting, but anyone can do it for
an hour or so. As with any skill, the more we practiced, the
better we got, until we had events where the Blue Flag stayed
up from the end of set-up until the beginning of tear-down.
If there is no one to practice with locally, see if you can
practice writing letters to someone in persona. Maybe you
will want to start with e-mail just to get your feet wet, then
move to hand-written paper letters as your skill with a quill
pen improves. However you do it, reach out to others and
get yourself a practice group. After all, pretending is always
more fun with playmates!

founded The Enchanted Ground. The Enchanted Ground is
Pennsic’s full-time authentic camp, and Duke Cariadoc is a
master of full persona-immersion.

Across Time in Song

Many years ago, at Pennsic 23, a young Master John ap
Wynne walked into a camp on the far side of the Serengeti
(The Pink Palace), guitar in hand and voice raised in song. A
young man named frieman from Drachenwald (lower case
intentional) listened in awe.
Master John is a Pennsic institution. His voice was a beau-
tiful high tenor that floated around the whole of Cooper’s
Lake. He sang beautiful period songs in languages not often
heard in this modern world. He was recognized as a laurel
for that, as well as teaching and inspiring countless others
who have gone on to make the world a more beautiful place.
His greatest joy was reaching as many camps as possible.
He walked from one end of Cooper’s Lake to other and
back every day. His journeys have inspired many, many
others to do the same. At their first meeting, frieman “Didn’t
know that Peers did that shift.” He instantly knew what he
wanted to do in the SCA. On that particular day, inspiration
reached frieman, and another Pennsic institution was born.
Lord frieman became frieman the Minstrel. He continued
down the path that Master John walked, and other minstrels
follow to this day.
Life can be cruel to us. Master John was recently in a hor-
rific automobile accident, silencing his voice for a time. It
is recovering, but very slowly. “They put up with me in the
bardic events,” said Master John, “But I sound more like
a bullfrog these days.” He has not lost the affability and
charm that makes him a diamond among diamonds. His
lovely songs are captured on discs that can be purchased at
MidEast Magic. We are also blessed with his presence after
a long absence, and you can visit him at the booth!
Among the steady stream of those welcoming John back
home was frieman, who had a special way of showing his
appreciation for that long-ago visit to his camp.

the guitar. His friend, Inqling, from An Tir, painted it with
bright and beautiful colors.
In what can only be described as a Pennsic Moment, the
guitar was presented to Master John in gratitude for another

Beside the combat ring was a snack table run by the Barony
of the Sacred Stones in Atlantia. I spoke with several vol-
unteers who showed me the impressive layout of Goldfish,
lemonade, and cookies. There was even a gluten-free option
for kids who needed it. While discussing the importance of
snack options with one volunteer, I caught the sight of kids
racing on horseback from the corner of my eye.
Ponte Alto Pallio, I learned, was a type of horse racing in
medieval Italy. The Children’s Fete included a proper ring
for young nobles to practice their riding skills. Paired with
a blow-up version of a hobbyhorse, children mounted their
steeds and raced three times around the ring. Afterwards, each
participant was given a sticker, a badge of honor amongst the
minor nobility.
For the more artistic types, there was a station for painting

ferent designs each year, and with a team of helpers, transfers

Daily disclaimer:
Like many, I like to use Pennsic as a chance to get away from the
political discussions that are so heated in the outside world. This
year, I’m proposing an alternative. Each day I will be presenting
two sides of an issue that was important during the time periods
we portray. They will be labeled A and B. The two sides will be my
personal interpretation, based on documents, stories, folklore, or
just rumors of the time. All spin is mine own. Please feel free to
research the topic or seek out an expert on your own. If you have an
opinion, feel free to argue, debate, and discuss…and VOTE. Come
place a ballot for whichever side you support. Write ins are allowed
with proper historical context. Results will be posted the next day.

The Estrogen and Axes Tournament held on Tuesday
morning continues to be a source of support, friendship,
and community for the female throwers of Pennsic. A total
of 46 throwers participated, with many resounding cries of
“Not Zero!” ringing across the range. Seven kingdoms were
represented in the tournament, with 15 throwers from the
East, nine from Atlantia, eight from Ealdormere, seven from
the Midrealm, five from Æthelmearc, one from Caid, and one
from Northshield.
The tournament was organized and run by Duchess Rylan
Buchanan and Baroness Lucia de Morenza, both members of
the Axe Maidens of Ealdormere.
The tournament was won by Baroness Rooheen of
Æthelmearc, with a score of 28 points. Tied for second were
Ethel and Myra with 24 points each, from Atlantia and the East
respectively. Prizes were handed out to all who participated.

Topic #7: Ivan IV – Awesome or Terrible?

A) Ivan, ruler of the Grand Duchy of Moscow from 1533
to 1547, was a crazy man. He was prone to rages, paranoia
and mental instability. He murdered his heir Ivan Ivanovich
and beat his pregnant daughter in law during one of his fits
for wearing immodest clothing; causing her to miscarry his
unborn grandson. He persecuted the princely clans of Russia,
executing, exiling or forcibly tonsuring members of the boyars
on trumped up charges. His paranoia led him to believe that
the nobles of Novgorod were going to rise against him, so he
massacred them. Thousands of Men, women, and children
were frozen, tortured and starved. He lost at least 6 wives,
maybe 8. The first of poisoning. A truly terrible man, who left Photo by Sean Sreamach
a more terrible legacy. Because of his decisions, and leaving Throwers participating in the Estrogen and Axes Tournament.
his middle son, an incompetent leader as his heir, his death
ushered in the Time of Troubles.

B) Ivan was a pious nobleman and a wonderful leader. The

word often translated as “Terrible” can also be “Formidable”
or “Awesome”. He was a strong leader who transformed the
Grand Duchy of Moscow, a medieval state, into the Kazan,
Astrakhan and Sibir, unifying the Russian states. He was a
patron of the arts and trade, founder of the first publishing
house in Russia and was very popular with the commoners
(except those from Novgorod). His legacy was a strong united
empire. Unfortunately, famine and war after his death caused
a time of troubles, but his efforts made his nation strong!
