“SYMBOLIC AND WRITTEN CODES”

Symbolic Codes

 show what is beneath the surface of what we see(objects, setting,


body language, clothing, color, etc.)

 Symbolic codes include the language, dress or actions of characters,


or iconic symbols that are easily understood.

 For example, a red rose may be used symbolically to convey romance,


or a clenched fist may be used to communicate anger.

Written Codes

 The use of language style and textual layout (headlines, captions,


speech bubbles, language style, etc.)

 Headline is the title for the main article, this would be normally
catchy

 Caption is the description of a main image

 Speech bubbles or speech balloons are a graphic convention used most


commonly in comic books, comics, cartoons to allow words to be
understood as representing the speech or thoughts of a given
character in the comic

 Language style is defined as the choice of words used by specific


group of people when they speak
