INTRODUCTION

This reaction paper is based on the story "Harmony in Hues," which addresses the
difficulties their town encounters and the differences of cultural diversity. The town's main fear is
that the two characters' murals, which are based on a variety of traditions, might dilute their
belief of cultural identity. It all comes down to highlighting how important it is to accept every
aspect of one's culture. It also shows the close relationship between the two main characters.
This reaction paper's subsequent sections will focus on the several significant concepts and
thoughts from the story itself. This reaction paper also highlights our individual responses and
experiences that are connected to or reminiscent of the events in the story. This reaction paper
will also address the significance and impact of the story, as well as the analysis we conducted
based on it.

PERSONAL REACTION

APRECIO, JERICK RUEL D.

The story "Harmony in Hues" is all about emphasizing the importance of accepting the
different characteristics or dissimilarities of their culture. It shows how strong the friendship of
the two characters named Aisha and Priya is, given that they have different cultural
backgrounds it didn't stop them from collaborating on a mural that serves to symbolize the
multiculturalism in their community. In the part where Aisha and Priya decided to be a part of the
multicultural fair by creating a mural that would symbolize the collaboration of both sides within
their community, and how they presented their different elements of culture, it shows that
despite their different cultural backgrounds they have still managed to share their cultural
elements in their community without doubt and thinking what the residents might think about
their cultural collaboration. Another one is when the residents felt and felt uncomfortable with
the mix of traditions of the two characters, fearing it might affect their own cultural identity. They
told stories, defended and explained how significant is unity even if they collaborated with their
culture it does not mean that we should also change our cultural identity but understand each
other's cultural heritage. To sum it up unity is important not only in terms of culture but also in
strengthening and improving our connections with other people by understanding the ideas and
opinions of both sides to build up a good community with other people and don't be affected by
what other people may think or say or how they critique you or another person.

HAPA, JHEDRIC LEO ALOYSIUZ G.

The story “Harmony in Hues” is a short and simple story but it has a beautiful meaning
and message regarding culture and tradition differences, it may be all different but it’s all should
be respected and appreciated. Aisha and Priya’s friendship contributed a lot in their town’s
annual multicultural fair, even though they have different cultural background, they managed to
make a mural showing the collaboration of the different culture and tradition they have. Some
residents disagree and felt discomfort for what Aisha and Priya did, as in real life, it is what
some people might feel for mixing the image of their culture with other culture especially without
having knowledge about the other culture and tradition or thinking that their culture and tradition
are being compared. But in my personal perspective, what the two friends did is a great way to
highlight the similarities and beauty of two culture and tradition that also can be a way to
promote two culture without competing and building connection and strong relationship between
two ethnicities. Aisha and Priya resolved the town’s controversy by hosting a meeting for the
members of their community and sharing stories and all about everyone’s different culture and
tradition for others to understand the differences of each culture. Although in real life, I think it is
difficult to resolve the controversy in that way especially in our modern society, arguments and
backlashes are possible to happen unless if the people in a community will be convinced to
learn about other culture and tradition and maintain peace between two or more ethnic groups.
So just like in the story, this kind of issue or controversy should be talked about to enlighten
others, because every culture and tradition have its own differences but it’s all beautiful in its
own way and origin, there is no need for comparison and competition of culture and tradition as
it should be celebrated, enjoy, and appreciated.

ILUMIN, KIRSTEN MAY S.

After reading the story, I realized that it's not always a good idea to only listen to what
others think when making decisions. The story shows this through the characters Aisha and
Priya, who became close friends even though they come from different cultures. They didn't let
society's expectations or their cultural differences get in the way of their friendship. They were
strong and didn't believe the rumors or negative things people said about them. They chose to
focus on their friendship and didn't care about what others thought. As a student, I think it's
important to share our own culture with others because it helps them understand different
perspectives. Even if some people feel uncomfortable, it shouldn't stop us from sharing who we
are. Aisha and Priya's story shows that it's okay to stand up for what we believe in and share
our culture, even if it causes some disagreements.

IMPORTANTE, JOHN JOSEPH Q.

The story "Harmony in Hues" has two main characters, Aisha and Priya, who created a
mural to represent their culture. They tried to participate in the multicultural feast and then
people didn't like the two combining their culture. But In the end, the mural symbolizes peace
and harmony in their culture. I think the author is trying to say through this story is no matter
what culture or religion you are part of you have to know how to respect them and they will
return it. The two main characters Aisha and Priya are the best example of that even though
they are both hues and their culture is different they tend to interact with each other with respect
even though we all know that it is hard to make an interaction with another culturized person.

LACHAMA, RICHARD C.

The short story "Harmon in Hues" is a beautiful piece of literature that deeply impacted
my perspective on individuality. Although I only read it for about three minutes, it made me
realize the importance of unity, especially in times when cultural differences can create conflicts.
This story opened my mind to the idea of accepting each other's differences instead of blindly
rooting for our own culture. I concluded that in order to avoid conflicts, we must try to
understand each other instead of being biased by our own thoughts. Misunderstanding each
other can lead to conflicts that can be easily resolved through unification, just like in the story.
Even though the characters had conflicts about each other's culture, they were able to come
together through the idea of understanding each other.

LIBREJA, SAMANTHA EUNICE O.

In response to the short story "Harmony in Hues," I feel as if I understand the characters'
motivations and grasp the goal of the story. Both contributed elements of their cultures to the
mural they intended to paint to show to the public their country's representation. However, the
idea of their mural made some citizens in their town uneasy, which is natural given that many of
us have diverse backgrounds, religions, and ideological views. Some locals were uneasy with
their mural since they believed it would offend others depending on their beliefs. I loved the idea
that they held a town meeting and it showed that they valued each person’s opinions and points
of view. In that way, they resolved the situation in a mannered and thoughtful way. They
considered other people's thoughts. This story shows that in every misunderstanding that we’re
facing, we can always solve it in a calm and right way of thinking to make of everyone is
comfortable and no hard feelings are going on. Making sure that in every situation everyone is
heard.

REPATACODO, LEWIN FAUSTIN

The story of Aisha and Priya beautifully depicts collaboration and harmony, overcoming
differences to create a vibrant symbol of unity in diversity. Their mural became a testament to
the strength found in shared values and the celebration of individuality within a community. the
essence of "Harmony in Hues" very well. The story shows the power of friendship and
cooperation in bridging cultural differences, leading to a profound change within the town. That
even though their cultures are different, they still learn to get along so that both sides can be at
peace.

SALAMANQUE, LOUIEZA PRIYA A.

The Story “Harmony of Hues” is all about cultural diversity, Aisha and Priya are not only
friends, but they have a big dream in their community to show up their cultural heritage of their
constituents and to enhance the youth or unity of the people living in their community they have
a freedom to choose of what they wanted even if they have different culture but they still
managed to respect each other perspective and they can still do it even the people are
uncomfortable but they did not care of what will the people would say about them.

SAN FELIPE, KYRENE MARIE C.

The tale "Harmony and Hues" illustrates the value of two distinct cultures despite their
disparities. Their respective cultures are harmonious, as implied by the title. "Harmony" refers to
each culture's unique historical narrative that gave rise to it; both have fascinating tales.
Furthermore, "hues" provides a meaningful contrast to their culture; it is a serving light that
embodies their way of life. In this tale, two cultures have misinterpreted Aisha and Priya's mural
as something offensive that makes them uneasy since they believe that their culture has been
marginally disparaged. Aisha and Priya, the two girls, chose to meet with both of their families
as a result of their ongoing, contentious interactions.

TEMPERANTE, KIMJHIM R.

This story beautifully captures the essence of unity in diversity and the power of
collaboration across different backgrounds. Aisha and Priya's friendship serves as a beacon of
hope, showcasing how individuals can bridge cultural divides through empathy and dialogue.
The town meeting scene is particularly poignant, demonstrating the transformative potential of
open communication and shared storytelling. Ultimately, the mural's unveiling signifies a triumph
of inclusivity and mutual respect, leaving a lasting legacy of harmony within the community. It's
a heartwarming reminder of the beauty that emerges when people come together to celebrate
their differences.

CONNECTION TO PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

APRECIO, JERICK RUEL D.

I can relate my personal experience with the story "Harmony in Hues" because one of my friend
has a different religion from mine, his religion is iglesia ni cristo while mine is catholic but even
though we have dissimilarities in our beliefs and traditions of our religions we share with each
other the practices that we do in our religion and respect each side because we both
understand that as a human being we have our own ideas and opinion about certain things and
how we believe in it.That's how we maintain our relationship without criticizing each other and
like in the story we don't let other people's opinions stop us to understand each other.

HAPA, JHEDRIC LEO ALOYSIUZ G.

The personal experience I can relate to the story is when we visited Bali, Indonesia in
2016. I was curious about its difference from Philippines when we arrived, I thought it was very
similar to Philippines when I observed the surroundings while we are on our way to our hotel but
the next hours later, I realized that it was so different, I was not very used to its foods, culture,
and people’s behavior. But I met an Indonesian boy that introduced and enlightened me about
his country, he talked about the culture and tradition of Bali as well its background and I realized
that it has also similarities in some culture of Philippines, he told me to try some of their foods
and I actually loved it when I tried the foods he told me about and I also told him some of
Philippines’ most delicious delicacy. I also finally understood why the people’s behavior there is
different from Filipinos, I misjudged it and felt sorry for thinking about it negatively. My family
also felt a little bit uneasy because of its difference of culture from ours, I taught them what the
Indonesian boy taught to me and they finally slowly appreciate all about Indonesia. As we travel,
we learn more about the country and realize how beautiful it is and how it reminds me of my
country. We went back home filled with knowledge and memories from Indonesia and missing
the country until today.

ILUMIN, KIRSTEN MAY S.

The personal connection I have to the story is with my friend Yhasri. She is Muslim, and
I am Catholic. Despite our different beliefs, we are very close to each other and to our families.
Yhasri's faith and practices are different from mine, as she follows her own god and has certain
dietary restrictions, such as not eating pork. I have always been curious about these
differences, and Yhasri has kindly explained her beliefs and culture to me.Unfortunately, there
have been people who have criticized our friendship, suggesting that Yhasri is a bad influence
on me because of our differing beliefs. However, I strongly disagree with this notion. Yhasri and
I have remained good friends, and our friendship has not led me to do anything wrong. On the
contrary, being friends with someone from a different culture and belief system has enriched my
life and expanded my knowledge. We enjoy sharing our experiences with each other, and it has
fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation for our respective backgrounds. My
friendship with Yhasri has taught me that having friends with different cultural and religious
beliefs does not lead me astray. Instead, it provides an opportunity for learning and growth, as
we exchange knowledge and embrace each other's experiences.

IMPORTANTE, JOHN JOSEPH Q.

My personal experience I think I could relate this when I transfer school because every
time that I transfer or change school I feel uncomfortable, because I think I might do something
wrong to hate me and because of this situation I tend to think that I'm an impostor to their
community I feel lonely sometime but I think it is common. Trying to understand their language,
their ways thinking, and also on how they speak and sometimes I try to teach them my culture
or what I learn from the past, because making a good bound to others is a great example to
share and know their opinion. Knowing other thoughts it can improve are way of thinking and we
can adjust in any situation and by that we can use it to understand their culture and avoid
making mistake to disrespect their believes.

LACHAMA, RICHARD C.

The story "Harmony in Hues" is what my everyday life feels like, I'm still in the state of
selfishness where I see the world using my own perception. Everyday, I don't even try to
change my perception into the perception of others in order to achieve a conversation without
misunderstanding. Everyday, there's someone who always needs to interrupt to correct me and
my brother's arguments to stop the possible chaos. Everyday, I lack understanding, acceptance
that I'm wrong, and appreciation for my brother's perception of our topic, because of that selfish
acts, my arguments may always result in problems.

LIBREJA, SAMANTHA EUNICE O.

I think the personal experience that I can align to this story is that two of my friend’s are
in a different religions. While their religions, traditions and worldviews are different—one is Born
Again, the other is Muslim—we appreciate and are mindful of everyone's right to believe in any
religion. But occasionally, I get this thing called "culture shock" because I find it hard to accept
that their faith has certain particular traditions, the dos and don'ts, and other actions that are not
more prevalent in Roman Catholic culture. Even though we occasionally misinterpret each other
due to our personal views, we just explain and expose each other to the traditions and beliefs of
our own religions. This made me recognise that the knowledge I had gained was beneficial and
worthy not just for myself but also to others that are not as same as my religion and culture.

REPATACODO, LEWIN FAUSTIN

For me, the personal experience that i can relate to this story is that when every time I
am with my family there are many things that need to be discussed for example we are always
having fun talking to our future guiding us in doing PT, teaching us how to be practical in life but
not in everything they are like that there are also times when we don't agree like when my
brother wants to watch something on tv and I want to watch another channel and we fight over
that and because of that I will be scolded because there are things that we do not agree on, I
will always be scolded before, Because of the mistakes I make. because I was naughty then.
They always tell me and talk to me thoroughly, they tell me again and again, but instead of
getting angry or harboring anger towards them, I just understand them, that's my lesson, that's
my fault, why I did it and because of that I learned to know right and wrong and now, I have
become a true brother to them, I teach them to be responsible and to be good people. It's really
the best when you have parents who truly love you and don't ask for anything in return. Even if
your family isn't perfect, as long as they're happy and don't break up, it's called the gift of God.

SALAMANQUE, LOUIEZA PRIYA A.

In my own personal experience that i can relate or connect in the Story of “Harmony of
Hues” is that i have learned to cooperate with my classmates or friends when it comes in doing
a Project or Performance task even though we have our own different opinion or perspectives, I
can still respect them because understanding each other is a way for us to be mindful and it will
reminds us that unity or cooperation is important in our life when we are doing something that
needs a cooperation and the other that i can connect is when i saw a mural or paintings id
captivate my heart/soul even though it is from a different artist i still appreciate them and that is
also a Unity and it create sa visual impact of who appreciate the painting and we can still call it
Unity or cooperation.

SAN FELIPE, KYRENE MARIE C.

This story relates to one of my experiences in life. I lived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and
studied there when I was in preschool. I have met different people of different races and
cultures. I have observed their practices. I had this one friend in kindergarten who was an
Arabian. I have noticed that my culture differs a lot from his, and our practices are very different.
We tend to have misunderstandings and sometimes offend each other because we have little
knowledge about each other's culture. But this didn't let our friendship end. We shared each
other's practices and explained how it should be done to avoid misinterpretations. We have
learned a lot from each other. I have learned that people with different cultures can still get
along with each other despite their differences. I have also learned that every culture and its
practices have their own purpose and have their own way to symbolize their race.

TEMPERANTE, KIMJHIM R.

After I read the story of Aisha and Priya, I also experienced the problems and I reached
the point where I felt like I wanted to give up because during the pandemic I was always at
home and after two years of the pandemic, it was back to normal, and I met people who will
help me with my problems and understand my feelings, I'm lucky because they became my
friends and they encourage me to overcome my problems and they are always there,
sometimes we have misunderstanding but in the end we also congratulated each other like in
the story of priya and aisha I learned the importance of having friends I thought what if I don't
have friends what if I just give up on things that I shouldn't give up but Fortunately, I have
friends who are real and I can rely on in all trials, I thank them and I will never forget them
because they gave me color in life.
