For me, new graduates should decline a nursing management position since one of the

requirements to be an effective manager is clinical expertise. There is a lot of

things that only experience can teach and I believe these are one of the most
valuable lessons you will ever learn in the field that you will never read in
books. I believe a nurse is ready to assume a managerial position when the nurse
herself is confident that she has gained enough clinical experience and skills.
Being a manager means there is a possibility of leading a team of more experienced
nurses. If the nurse is confident, knowledgeable and skilled enough to lead and
maintain authority over a team of experienced nurses, then she is ready to take a
managerial position.

Theory X and Y which I believe comes hand in hand with Employee Participation
theory are the most useful theories to nurse managers. Being a manager doesn't only
mean that you are skilled, experienced and knowledgeable. Being an effective
manager means that you will be able to motivate your staff to develop their skills
and confidence. They should look up to you as a role model and be motivated to work
with you. I believe the performance of your staff depends on how well you treat
them.

My ideal nurse manager would be someone confident not only with her knowledge but
also with her skills. Someone who is well-mannered and can communicate effectively
with both her staffs and patients. Someone who can treat everyone regardless of
their positions with respect and still be able to maintain her authority over her
suborndiates. I will definitely want to work with someone dedicated to her work and
knows how to motivate her staff to give their 100% and to always take a step
forward to improvement.
The worst manager for me would be someone who is incompetent and ill-mannered.
Someone who thinks highly of herself and won't accept mistakes. Someone who doesn't
care about her work and the welfare of her staff. Someone who only respects anyone
superior to her and discourages her staff in improving their skills. Someone holds
her staff back from moving forward out of fear of being overpowered. This kind of
manager would be difficult for me since her heart is really not meant to manage and
lead.
