Objectives: 
This subject is taught to impart knowledge in the area of numerical integration and
Calculus.

Expected Outcome: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to


1. Do numerical integration for various problems
2. Do interpolation using various interpolation techniques.
3. Understand the Partial Differential equations and its solutions.
4. Understand the variational concept.

Contents:  
Solutions of Simultaneous Equations ­ Solution of linear equations – Direct
methods – Gauss elimination - Cholesky method – Iterative methods – Gauss-Seidel and
Jacobi method –-Solutions of Non linear equations – Newton Raphson’s - Modified
Newton Raphson’s methods – Alpha Constant Method - Riks -Wempner method .

Interpolation and approximation – Lagrange - Spline and Hermite interpolation –


Approximation – Error of approximation – Norms for discrete and continuous data –
Least squares approximation.

Numerical  Integration – Newton Cotes closed quadrature – Gauss-Legendre


Quadrature – Multiple integration.

  Numerical  Solution  of  Partial  Differential  Equations – Elliptic - Parabolic and


Hyperbolic equation – Solutions of Laplace and Poisson’s equations - Solution of one
dimensional time dependent heat flow - Vibration of strings - Plates (simply supported
and fixed edges) subjected to transverse loads – Torsional problems using Finite
difference scheme.

  Calculus of Variation - Maxima and Minima of functions of two or more independent


variables – Lagrange’s method of multipliers – Functional – Variational concept – Euler’s
equation for one independent variable – Differential equation constraint – Functional
dependent on higher order derivates – Euler-Poisson’s equation – Integral constraint
(isoperimetric problems) – Variational problems involving several independent
variables – Ostrogradsky equation.
