ABSTRACT

Dewi Yunia: Application of Project-Based Worksheets on Phytoremediation of Tofu

Liquid Waste Ammonia Using Biofilter
This study aims to analyze the ability of students to complete project-based worksheets
in the treatment of ammonia-containing liquid wastes using wasp nest biofilter and
phytoremediation processes that utilize water hyacinth plants. Tofu liquid waste
containing large amounts of ammonia will damage the aquatic ecosystem. So that
knowledge about waste treatment needs to be given to 26 students who take waste
management and processing courses in the semester. This research method uses a pre-
experiment design, one-shot case study to measure the scientific attitude of the
experimental activities. The results showed that the ability of students to complete
project-based worksheets on phytoremediation of ammonia tofu wastewater using
biofilter was an average of 91% with very good categories. The ability of students to
do tofu wastewater treatment also showed very good results, which were shown by
ammonia levels which were lowered by each group based on predetermined residence
time variations. The most effective residence time variation in reducing ammonia
levels was 8 days. This is in accordance with previous studies that phytoremediation
using water hyacinth plants can reduce levels of pollutants such as ammonia.
